Summer Invitational Institute

Each summer, the AAMU Writing Project conducts a month-long institute for selected teachers, kindergarten through college, from North Alabama. The recruiting process involves filling out an application form and going through an interview. Candidates must make a commitment to further the mission of the Writing Project, which is to promote the teaching of writing in schools, kindergarten through college, and to develop themselves professionally through research and writing.

The institute is held on the Alabama A&M University campus. Participants (fellows) receive a stipend, which they can use as tuition to earn graduate credits.

During the institute, teachers

  • Develop inservice programs in such areas as the writing process, writing across the curriculum, and writing assessment;

  • Share with colleagues, through presentations and demonstrations, strategies of incorporating the teaching of writing a particular discipline;

  • Conduct research in educational matters; and

  • Write about their research in an anthology.

    After going through the institute, participants become Writing Project teacher consultants.
