Phobias
and fears are produced by internal anxieties that
become associated with particular situations. Some
may seem to serve a genuine purpose (fear of
heights, fire, etc) - mostly however, they appear to
be completely irrational. Do not be fooled! All
phobias do have a cause and all phobias do, or
perhaps did, serve some purpose - otherwise they
couldn't and wouldn't exist.
Nearly 1 in 10 Americans suffer from an anxiety
disorder. Anxiety disorders are chronic, irrational,
and can intensify if untreated. The National
Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) identifies five
anxiety disorders:
- generalized anxiety
disorder
- obsessive-compulsive
disorder
- post-traumatic stress
disorder
- panic disorder, and
- phobias
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD):
Approximately 3 to 4 percent of the American
population suffer from GAD. They chronically worry
and are tense out of proportion to the actual events
in their lives. People with GAD are often less
impaired than sufferers of other anxiety disorders.
They usually have sleep disorders and difficulty
relaxing, tend to feel tired, have trouble
concentrating, and often startle easily. GAD
generally comes on gradually, sometimes beginning as
early as childhood or adolescence, and symptoms can
diminish with age.
What is the difference
between fear or anxiety and actually having a
phobia?
The distinction generally made is to say that a fear
is rational and when fear becomes irrational it is a
phobia.
In reality the difference is mainly one of degree
and the handiest way to distinguish them is by
saying that a phobia is different from a fear by
being more irrational. Because, having being fuelled
by our imagination, every fear will have a degree of
irrationality to it. It is just that a phobia is an
intense irrational fear of something. It is not an
illness. It is not a mental disorder. Nor is it a
lack of will-power, or 'moral fiber', or
determination. A phobia can make one's life
miserable, cause embarrassment, and undermine self
confidence and self esteem.
Origins of Fear
Often people concentrate their energy on trying find
out what caused their fears initially. Much money
has been spent in the therapy industries in these
searches. But then what? You still feel phobic.
You do not have to 'learn to
live with' a phobia. Even without knowing its origin
or that its origin is out of conscious reach,
fearful people respond particularly well to
hypnosis, a positive and pro-active way to eliminate
the fear or anxiety or phobia.
Hypnosis can facilitate:
- the replacement of
catastrophic thoughts with truthful statements.
- the realization that
the physical sensations can cause no harm.
- the slowing down of a
rapid heartbeat.
- the achievement of a
sense of balance.
- the generation of deep
relaxation.
- freeing the throat to
swallow.
- overcoming intense
sensations of heat and cold.
- the promotion of
clear-headedness.
- restorative
diaphragmatic breathing.
Confronting Your Fears in Hypnosis
Systematic desensitization is a well organized
procedure to bring the psyche back into balance,
eliminating the fears through positive hypnotic
suggestion. The fears are met and faced through the
subconscious mind. Repeated confrontation causes
deterioration of the fear symptoms and increases the
ability to face and deal with past traumatic
experiences without apprehension, which the
conscious mind then accepts. Age regression can also
be a highly effective technique for uncovering
causes.
