"Nor must Uncle Sam's web-feet be forgotten. At all the watery margins they have been present. Not only on the deep sea, the broad bay, and the rapid river, but also up the narrow muddy bayou, and wherever the ground was a little damp, they have been, and made their tracks."  A. Lincoln  (Excerpt from his letter to James C. Conkling, August 26, 1863.)

On behalf of the members of the U.S.S. Fort Henry living history unit, welcome aboard our official website.
This web site (updated 5/21/09) is designed to provide you with information on the unit's members, goals, and activities.  You will also find various original documentation created by the members for you to learn about the role of the Union Navy during America's "War of the Rebellion" more commonly know as the "Civil War."  Slide your mouse over the Menu Tabs and you will quickly see most of this site's contents in drop down menus.

By going to the [About] tab and selecting the [Introduction] button, you will get all of the basic information on the unit.

The members of the U.S.S. Fort Henry are enthusiastic about the unit.  As you browse this site you will find out what we do to portray the men  of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps during the Civil War as well as the equipment they used.  From cutlass practice to infantry battles, artillery fire to pulling oars, beating to quarters to taps, and all in-between, we do it all!

Battle of Ballast Point     You will find much information about the unit as well as the history of the original U.S.S. Fort Henry, which patrolled the area off the Gulf Coast of Florida on this site.

We go beyond "reenacting," a term which has been misused thanks to the Hollywood sitcom crowd.  In "Living History" we bring the 1861-65 sailors and marines to life through first person impressions of Civil War life in the "Union Navy."

Enjoy the site - your comments are appreciated!  Perhaps we will see you at one of our events (check the schedule) in Florida. Again, thank you for visiting us.

I remain your Most Obedient Servant,
Acting Volunteer Lieutenant Edward Y. McCauley, Commanding
U.S. Gunboat Fort Henry
