The funny thing about Alabama is the most people think there's NOTHING in this state. On the average, I suspect they're correct, however Huntsville is another matter. There's a small government facility here called Marshall Space Flight Center, and as a result every company you've ever heard of (and some you haven't) in the areospace business has at least an office in Huntsville. It makes the city an oasis of civilization in the middle of not much.
Ok, so what about me? I'm an engineer working for CFD Research Corporation. If you're an engineer, too, you may recognize CFD as Computational Fluid Dynamics. For the rest of you, it's the science (and, to some extent, art) of using numerical algorithms as a virtual wind tunnel. In practice it involves abusing my computer at work to compute how fluid flow over and through various sorts of objects. CFDRC has about 150 employees, many of whom are engaged in R&D. I'm more of an applications engineer supporting our software customers (and potential customers) by solving their problems for them.
I received a BS in Nuclear Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Massachusetts, and an MS in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). My first job out of WPI was at Electric Boat in Groton, CT where I designed submarine parts, and first learned CFD. They were nice enough to pay for my MS, but were stingy with salaries. From EB I went to work for Proto-Power Corporation, a power industry consulting company formed in the mid-1970s by a group of former disgruntled EB engineers and largely staffed by former disgruntled EB engineers. I was there for a few years while I learned how to deal with customers who had more than one possible supplier. While at Proto-Power, the President of CFDRC and I found one another through a bizarre set of circumstances, and the rest, as they say, is history.
I have been playing in ASR since January of 1996. My first character, Isaac Stern is now the CO of the USS YAMATO. I also play Cynthia, the Warrenlady of Cleft Warren in the DragonLands, and Special Agent Jordan Stern, leader of Team ZULU in the X-Files RPG. There are also a handful of other characters and NPCs that I can lay claim to.
I would like thank my wife, Beth, for her help in editing this bio. Without her my life would be quiet and boring.
