INTRODUCTION

The USS YAMATO is a role playing unit in Alt.Starfleet.RPG, an internet newsgroup. ASR players assume the roles of characters on ships and starbases in the Star Trek universe. This ship's book is to give new players an introduction to the traditions of the YAMATO, and serve as a reference for experienced players.

MISSION PROFILE

The USS YAMATO NCC-1705-E is the first production Hiryo-class Light Cruiser commissioned into Starfleet service. Based on the venerable Soveriegn-class starship, the Hiryo-class starship is intended to combine the mission flexibility of the Hood-class cruiser with the improved endurance and speed of her Storm-class cousin. The Hiryo-class design has integrated an interchangeable sensor/weapons pod and modern subsystems into the proven Soveriegn-class spaceframe. Making the YAMATO one of the most versatile starships in Starfleet. Allowing the YAMATO and her sister ships to be equipped with a powerful sensor suite for science missions to a weapons platform for either defensive or offensive military engagements.

MISSION SUMMARIES

Mission summaries will be developed by the CO and XO and maintained on the YAMATO web site. The CO and XO will make every effort to develop mission summaries in a timely fashion.

Starfleet Commendations Issued:

Stardate Commendation
110506 Outstanding Unit Citation - INDIGO Fleet

Commissioning: SD 70800
The USS YAMATO NCC-1705-E, the first production Hiryo-class Cruiser, was commissioned at Starbase Omega for Indigo Fleet. Her first commanding officer was Captain Steven Tripoli of the USS MELBOURNE NCC-61043-C, which was retired from active duty. His senior staff consisted of both officers from the USS MELBOURNE and the USS HOOD NCC-31100, which is the process of a major rebuild after severe battle damage.

SHIPS ROSTER

The ship's roster is maintained by the Commanding Officer and is mailed to the players on a regular basis and when there are changes to the roster. The roster is also maintained on the YAMATO web page by the CO. Players will make bio file updates to reflect promotions and awards in a timely fashion and forward the revised files to the crew. The CO may request the bio files be sent to him in a particular format to ease their integration into the web page.

Chain of Command:

CO
|
XO
|
OPS/2O----CSO----TAC----CEO----CSiO----FCO----MCO

Note: The CMO and CNS are normally not in the ship's chain of command, however, if these officers have taken and passed the Watch Officer's Exam, then they would be.

The Commanding Officer
The commanding officer is the officer actually in command of a vessel. He is a line officer, and in case of his absence or death he is succeeded by the line officer next in rank. Whatever his rank may be, the commanding officer is always called "the Captain." The captain represents and is responsible for the ship and all members of his crew. He does not make excuses or pass blame to others. Since he is accountable for all that the ship does, for the quality of training aboard, and for the conduct of the crew at all times, he is likewise given full power to enforce Starfleet Regulations aboard the ship. In short, since his responsibility is complete, his authority must also be complete.

The captain delegates the duties necessary for carrying out thefunctions of the ship to the executive officer, to the heads of thedepartments, to the officer of the deck, and through them to the crew.

From an RP standpoint, the player of the CO interfaces with the ASR administration, maintains the roster, and works to keep the mission moving along.

The Executive Officer
The executive officer is the line officer next in rank to the captain. Under the direction of the captain he has entire charge of all matters relating to the personnel, routine, and discipline of the ship. All orders issued by him are considered as coming from the captain. In case of the absence or disability of the captain, the executive officer assumes command. He is, by virtue of his position, senior to all staff officers on board. The assistants to the executive officer include the Chief-of-the-Boat responsible for the internal discipline and security of the ship and crew.

The Departments of a Ship
Each department of a ship is under a department head who is responsible for all matters pertaining to the department, such as: organization, training, safety, security, material conditions, maintenance, cleanliness, and the conduct of assigned officers and men.

Operations
The operations officer heads the operations department which collects, evaluates, and disseminats combat and operational information. The operations officer is assisted by the CIC officer, the communications officer, and the supply officer. The Combat Information Center (CIC) officer insures the maintainability and operation of the primary intelligence center of the ship. The CIC is where sensor and probe data is collected, interpreted, and disseminated to other departments. The communications officer is responsible for maintaining and operating all internal and external communications equipment. And the supply officer is responsible for the procurement, receipt, stowage, issue of, and accounting for equipment, repair parts, and consumable supplies required by the ship.

Tactical
The tactical officer heads the combat systems department which is responsible for external defense of the ship and security of the away teams. This includes maintenance and training of personnel who man the local fire control stations for all weapon, ECM, and point defense systems. The tactical officer is assisted by main battery and photon fire control officers, a space defense officer, and Marine and CIC liaison officers.

Engineering
The engineering department is headed by the chief engineering officer. The chief engineer is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all propulsion and auxiliary machinery, the control of damage, the maintenance of shuttlecraft systems, the repair of the hull and its fixtures, and all repairs beyond the capacity of other departments. Assistants to the chief engineer include a main propulsion assistant, a damage control and repair assistant, and an electronic materials assistant.

Sciences
The science department is headed by the bridge science officer. This officer is the senior line officer in the science department, though may not be neither the most senior science officer nor the most accomplished. The science officer is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the bridge science terminals and scientific sensor arrays. The science officer is also responsible for resource allocation within the sub-departments (astrophysics, xenobiology, botany, etc.) which make up the science department.

Flight Control
The flight control officer heads both the navigation and flight operations departments. The navigation department is responsible, under the commanding officer, for the safe navigation and piloting of the ship. While the flight operations department is concerned with the function of the all embarked craft. It is charged with shuttlecraft launching, landing, and handling operations, with the service maintenance, and repair of shuttle craft, and with the handling of shuttle fuel and ordinance.

Medical
The medical department is headed by the senior officer of the Medical Corps serving on the ship. The Chief Medical Officer is responsible for maintaining the health of the officers and crew; the treatment and care of the sick and wounded; the sanitation and hygiene of the ship and its company; the inspection of the ship, food, and water insofar as the health of the crew may be affected; and for training and directing personnel assigned to the medical department. All Medical Corps personnel are not eligible to command a starship since a medical officer has the authority to relieve another officer of duty, thus constituting a conflict of interests.

Marines
The commanding officer of the ship's Marine detachment, although not a department head, occupies a somewhat similar position with respect to the administration of the Marines aboard in matters pertaining strictly to the Marine Corps. The Marine officer reports to the ship's executive officer. When his men are detached for duty with other shipboard departments, they answer to the authority of the departmental officers. Marine officers are not qualified to command a starship and, hence, like medical officers, not eligible for starship command.

Marines serve as ceremonial and security guards in space or in port. Marines may be detached for other duties in space, such as communications, staff, liaison, and flight duty.

The functions of a Marine detachment detailed for duty aboard a ship are:
1. To provide a unit organized, trained, and equipped for operations in dock or as part of the ship's landing party.
2. To provide gun crews.
3. To provide internal security for the ship.

Notes:

When Starfleet requested a replacement to the HOOD-class light cruiser that possessed the HOOD-class' multi-mission abilities and the STORM-class' endurance and speed, several competing designs were submitted with a design based of the SOVEREIGN-class light cruiser being the resulting choice.

The HIRYO-class light cruiser has a hull shape very similar to its SOVEREIGN-class cousin, with three noticeable differences. With the first being its slightly smaller size, the second difference places the warp nacelles below the secondary hull as oppose d to above. This allows the class to be equipped with an interchangeable sensor/weapons pod set above the ship's primary hull allowing the HIRYU-class to be optimized for various different missions.

The key feature in the success of the design, like its HOOD-class predecessor, is the interchangeable pod, also designated Multi-Mission Pod (MMP), which has been designed to allow the installation of the most advanced equipment in Starfleet. The various MMP's are designated Type-1 through Type-5 and have a tradeoff between computer, sensors and weapons systems. The weapons pods are intended for military applications and include enhanced resolution tactical sensors, but lack the many advanced scientific scanning systems. All pods contain an auxiliary reactor core to supplement the power required by the various equipment contained within. Also, each pod features a tie-in to a third computer core in the secondary hull dedicated and optimized for multi-mission profiles.
