Brig. General Paul J. Semmes

General Semmes was mortally wounded at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863.
General Paul Jones Semmes was born on June 4, 1815 in Wilkes Co. Georgia. He died July 10, 1863 in Martinsburg, W.V. after receiving wounds at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. Prior to the war, he was a banker, planter and a captain in the state militia.
In 1861, he was Colonel of 2nd Georgia. In March 1862, promoted to Brig. Gen. in command of a brigade in Magruder's division fighting in Yorktown, Williamsburg and Seven Pines. He was assigned command of a brigade in McLaws' division fighting in Savage's Station, Malvern Hill, Crampton's Gap, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Salem Church and Gettysburg.
