Crystal Bay Travel Park News

EDWIN KNEPPER,  VETERAN & MUSICIAN

Edwin Knepper, current Crystal Bay Travel Park shareholder, resident from 1978 to 1981, and World War II veteran, was among the participants in the June 22, 2011 Northwest Ohio Honor Flight.

Accompanied by his sponsor, Cari Collins, Ed joined a group of 79 other veterans of the Second World War who enjoyed a day trip to Washington, D.C. to visit the National WWII Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, Air Force Museum and Iwo Jima Memorial.

In addition to priceless memories, Ed brought back many souvenirs and a camera full of photos from what he described as “a thoroughly enjoyable day.”

Ed, a trumpet player, was a musician in the Navy in the Pacific Theatre of the war. “I was lucky,” he says. A long time member of the Federation of Musicians, Ed was a member of Johnny Knorr’s Big Band.

The instrument, he said, made a difference in his life twice. As a boy, he was having trouble getting air in his lungs. The pediatrician told his parents to teach him a wind instrument. When he began hearing rumblings of WWII, he once again turned to the trumpet.

"Thought if I was drafted I wouldn't have a chance," said Knepper, who became a musician third class and played with the Toledo Symphony for 14 years. He also met Bob Hope and Jack Benny.   "I was sitting on the end of the trumpet section one night, when he (Benny) came up and said, 'Sailor, can I have half of your chair?' I moved over and let him sit beside me and that's a true story."

Ed’s latest gig was this past December, when, as part of the Owens Community College Concert Band, he played in a concert to honor Pearl Harbor vets.

As an educator, he had the privilege of starting Penta County’s Vocational School as Dean of Business Technology, in what is now known as Owens Community College.

NEW AIRPORT SERVICE by Irene Przeklasa

Need a ride to the airport?  Ed and I tried TWO GALS TRANSPORT.  We found their card in the clubhouse and thought we’d give it a try.  Nancy picked us up at our door the morning of our flight home for Christmas.  She called the night before to confirm and arrived shortly before our pick up time.  The ride to the airport was direct and pleasant.  There were no stops for other passengers.

We arranged for a return pick up and gave her our flight number.  We arrived a half hour early (2:10 pm to be exact).  When we got down to baggage claim, we called for our pick up and were greatly surprised when we found that Pam was already at the curb waiting for us.  We were back home in Crystal Bay by 3:00 p.m.

The cost was the same or less than the SUPER SHUTTLE without the many stops.  We’d recommend them highly.  If you need a ride to the airport, call 727-409-6200.  I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
