Community

AWE is governed by a Board of Directors and has elected officers. Representatives of AWE work closely with the City of Charleston Mayor's Committee for Employment of the Handicapped by increasing awareness and focus on issues dealing with wheelchair users and others with mobility impairments. AWE members serve many other service organizations such as the Disability Resource Center (DRC), CARTA, and the City of Charleston Commission boards of elected officials. Members work hand in hand with DRC in providing direct services such as ramp building, minor home modifications for those with disabilities, and wheelchair equipment, parts and repairs.

Maria, one of our members enjoys the surf at Folly Beach!

Early in 2002, AWE purchased and donated 3 Beach Wheelchairs to the Charleston County Parks. Charleston County Parks and Recreation was able to place one of these Beach Wheelchairs at Folly Beach, Isle of Palms Beach, and Beachwalker Park at Kiawah. These chairs are free for public use. Contact DRC or the Parks for more information.
