Services
AWE helps educate individuals of their legal rights and of laws that affect their lives. AWE helps people with disabilities become informed leaders in their communities and learn to speak up for change.
AWE members offer Peer Support services to local hospitals such as MUSC, Roper, Healthsouth, Trident Medical Centers, and others. We also go to elementary, middle, and high schools to educate and encourage students with mobility impairments to get involved in their own recreational activities, self-advocacy, and skills for independent living.
AWE provides individuals with information about other groups or associations that can benefit them, such as, the Disability Resource Center, Spinal Cord Injury Association, Amputee and Stroke support groups, and more. AWE also refers people with disabilities to these organizations to assist them with their needs.
In addition, AWE provides athletes with disabilities, knowledge of upcoming sporting events and recreational activities.
AWE provides, when possible, supplies and labor for minor home modifications, such as wheelchair ramps, to wheelchair users in the community who don't have accessible homes. These direct services are provided in co-operation with the Disability Resource Center of Charleston. Please contact DRC at (843) 225-5080 if you have a need.
