Lawrence County Beekeepers Visit

May 8, 2005

Some members of the Lawrence County beekeepers visited us today to learn some of our beekeeping skills as well as look at our queen rearing operation.

L-R, Jerry Chenault, Chris Martin, Bill Mullins, Hillman Locklayer, Jimmy Parker, Dale Karrh, Jerry Claborne and Mary Gibson.

Here is a photo of the group with Bill Mullins after they arrived.

In The Beeyard.

We showed the group some of our working bee hives nearby. Here we examine a frame of brood for the presence of eggs which we use as an indicator of a queen-right hive.

Trap-out

Before we went to the queen yard, Bill showed the group a trap-out he has at a home close to the beeyards. This trap-out is used to trap the bees out of the house so that the population of the bees inside the house will dwindle day by day until there are practically no bees inside. When the bees come out of the house, they can't get back in, so they instead go to the outside hive placed near the entrance. After a few weeks when most all of the bees are out, the hive box with the bees is removed and the entrance to the house is sealed.
