Mount Rose Hike

Summit Elevation: 10,774 ft.

Over looking the beautiful Lake Tahoe and Carson City, Nevada, Mount Rose is a mountain of immense size and fun. Hikers must work long and hard to reach the summit and luckily I had the chance to hike to the top. Compared to Alabama, Mt. (Mount) Rose and Reno, Nevada, have a completely different atmosphere. The elevation that I personally am accustomed to is more around the range of 300 to 400 ft. above sea level. Well, when my dad and I took the chance of making the trek to Mt. Rose's summit, you could definitely feel that change in atmosphere. The air is thin and therefore you must take deep steady breaths which is difficult when out of shape and out of breath (that's me). The farther my dad and I got up the mountain the more often the breaks and rest stops became. Although it was difficult and took approximately four hours to walk six miles up to the top (it took about two and a half hours walking down) the view and scenery is positively worth the effort.

Carson City is off to the right but most of the picture is occupied by Reno, from the middle to the left. It's kind of hazy so it's difficult to see all the mountains. Reno_from_summit.jpg (59505 bytes)
Tons and tons of butterflies were covering the top of the mountain. No joke, there had to be at least one or two butterflies per square foot. These butterflies were called Painted Lady butterflies and they were supposedly migrating to or from South America. In this picture it is difficult to see the butterflies but you may be able to see a few. ashley_with_butterflies.jpg (57875 bytes)
