Rock-crawling in Monteagle, Tennessee. |

Rocket City Rock Crawlers participated in the SFWDA Cleanup Day on March 10,
2001, March 9, 2002 and again March
3, 2003 at Tellico ORV area. From left, the 1st, 2nd and 4th people are USFS
employees. I dont know any of the rest of these folks, but there were a
lot more from various clubs picking up trash. There was one other place
where bagged trash had been piled up which was substantially larger than this
pile. I picked up a full 30 gal contractor bag full of cans and other
trash just on the dirt road leading up to upper 2. People are really
trashing Tellico.

Trail #2 in Upper Tellico ORV Area, NC. Truck was still IFS at this
time...

Long Point, PCSF Tn. The sign says "End of Trail"

Campsite at Big Oak Grove campground, Tellico. I pretty much had it to
myself...

MTTR Trail Ride on May 19, 01 - private property near Graysville, Tn - incredible
trails led by a Hummer - Thanks Mickey!

Trail #7, Tellico ORV area. This obstacle is known as Peckerwood, and
it took a toll on my drivers door, as you can see.

I bought this truck new and it now has over 250,000 miles on it. As of
January 2002, the truck became a non-daily-driver. Here's the new tow rig:

2001 F250 Extra-Cab 7.3L Powerstroke Diesel 4X4, 6 speed manual transmission
Now I guess I gotta learn about diesels....
And the modifications begin!
Heres the Kenwood D700 installation:
The control head (apologies for blurry photo):
The main unit is located under the passenger seat. The homebrew GPS
unit is the small black box ziptied to the seat frame immediately below the
Kenwood unit.
This location protects the radio from rear passengers feet because its so
far forward under the seat, and the seat adjustment lever acts as a protective
guard for the radio and its connectsion from the front passengers feet.
The Kenwood D700 is a 2m and 70cm unit with APRS and packet built right
in. The GPS is a homebrew (thanks to KC4UII, Rick) Motoroloa GPS board
with a TAPR interface and
a remote antenna. This unit puts out NMEA sentences 24/7 which the D700
uses for APRS (Automated Position Reporting System). See my location at http://map.findu.com/ke4kuz.
Headlight "upgrade"....Before:
After:
The sealed beams will be replaced by Bosch or Cibie H4 enclosures with 80/100
watt bulbs, and an upgraded harness. I think that the sealed beams look
better, too. I think the original aero headlamps give the truck a dead
look to it, whereas the sealed beams look somehow alert...or something.
