To all to whome these presents shall come I Edward Diggs Esqr., Govr. &
Capt. Generall of Virginia send greetinge in our Lord Everlastinge.
Wheras by the articles dated at James City the 12th of March 1651 concluded
7 signed by Comrs. Appointed by the authority of Paraliment for therereducing,
settlinge & govering of Virg. It was provided that the previledge
of fifty acres of land for every person transported into this colony should
be continued as formerly granted and whereas by act of a Grand Assembly made
26th April 1652 it was provided that all pattents should hereafter be signed
under Governor's hand with the secretaries and shall be provided and
appointed. Now know yee that I the said Edward Diggs Espr. Doe with the
consent of the Councell of State accordingly give and grant unto William
Justice One thousand one hundred and ninety eight acres of land being a
tract near Flower de Hundred Creek in Charles City County bounding south
southwest into the woods, north northeast and northeast by north on the said
creek, west southwest a mile in breadth at the heads & east southeast on
the land of Cheney Boice with marked trees on every station. The said lands
being formerly granted by patent unto Capt. John Frame the date of the first
of September 1643 and due unto the same William Justice as marriening the
daughter and hyr.of sd. Capt Frame, as also by and for the transportation of
twenty four persons into this colony, To have and to hold the said land with
his due share of all mines and mineralls therein conteyned with all rights
and priviledges of hunting, hawking, fishing and fowling with all woods
waters and rivers with all proffits commodities and hereditaments whatsoever
in anie wise belonging to said land to him the said William Justice his
heyres or assignes or ever in as large and ample manner to all intents and
purposes as is exprest in a Charter of Orders from the late treasurer and
company dated 18th November 1618 or by consepuence may be justly collected
out of the same or out of the letters pattents whereon they are grounded.
Yielding and payeing unto the rent gatherers thereunto appointed for every
fifty acres of land therein by these presents given & granted yearely at the
feast of Saint Michael the arch angel the fee rent of one shilling which
payment is to bee made seven years after the first grant or seating there of
and not before. Provided that if the said William Justice his heyres or
assignes do not plant or seat or cause to bee planted or seated upon the
said land within three years the next ensueinge that then it may & shall be
lawful for any adventurer or planter to make choice & seat thereon. Given
under our hands at James City the 26th day of April, 1656. The twenty
four persons being-Mary Sherwood, Richard Lee, John Barber, Edmond Joyner,
Matthew Baile, Thomas Whittier, William Coleman, Wm. Phillips, Joseph
Errence, Thomas Haistwood, Alice Mitchell, Rebecca Frame, Francis Nelson,
William Price, William Lawrence, Mary Lawrence[twice}, Ann Lawrence, Sarah
Lawrence, William Balance, John Hatley, Elizabeth Hearth, Peter Plumer, and

He built the first two-story house ever raised in Germantown, Penn having been present and partaken of the raising-dinner. It stood near the southwest corner of Main and Tulpehocken Streets. Arents Klincken served several years as burgess of Germantown, but finally, in 1691, declined longer service for conscience' sake. He died at the age of eighty, leaving a son, Anthony, a noted hunter, who spent a long life in such exercises in the vicinity, and from whom the traditional name of Anthony has since been perpetuated in the Williams family.
