July 22, 1864, Paroled, and Took the Oath July, 1864 so he could work and look after his Father who was invalid. This started a Famlily rumer that he served in the Union Army. But ofcourse this was not true according to his Confederate Pension Record approved Jan 1928 & Obituary. He was 86yrs Old when filing for pension. Everybody in his Units had died. He wouldn't have gotten his pension if it wasn't for affidavits signed by Widows of the men he served with, and Neighbors.

Oldest Confederate Veteran in Marion County Will Be Honored in Rites Today:
Jasper Tenn., Nov. 30._W. H. Smedley, 97, oldest Confederate Veteran of Marion County, died at his home at Whiteside, near here, this afternoon. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 P.M. at the residence, with the Revs. A.M. Tomlinson and J.E. Merrill officiating. Burial will be in Hooker Church Cemetery. Smith Funeral Service in charge. Mr. Smedley is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Cooper Doyle, Mrs. J.W. Price, Sr., Mrs. Thomas Dagnan and Mrs. G.S. Williams: Sixteen grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. Parents: William SMEDLEY and Elizabeth MURPHY.
