Husband and wife killed in car crash By Michael Hewlett | Journal Reporter Published: September 26, 2009 A Lexington man and his wife died this morning after the car he was driving pulled out into the path of another car going east on U.S. 64, about five miles south of Thomasville, the N.C. Highway Patrol said. The wreck happened at 6:58 a.m. today at the intersection of Clarks Berry Church Road and U.S. 64, said Sgt. B.D. Stalvey of the highway patrol. Grant F. Smith, 66, of 173 John Beck Road in Lexington, was on Clarks Berry Church Road when he pulled out in front of Neal J. Byerly, who was driving a pick-up truck with horse trailer attached on U.S. 64. Smith and his wife, Cynthia Smith, 67, both died at the scene. Byerly,45, of 736 Kepley Road in Lexington, and his wife, Sharon S. Byerly, 46, were taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. A hospital spokeswoman said that Byerly was in fair condition and that Sharon Byerly was still being evaluated. Stalvey said no charges will be filed and that failure to stop at a stop sign was the contributing factor to the wreck. Highway 64 East. Grant Fredrick Smith, 66, of 173 John Beck Road, and his wife, Cynthia Hawks Smith, 67, died when Grant Smith pulled his 2002 Chrysler out into the path of a 2002 Chevy pickup truck driven by Neal Jerome Byerly, 45, of 736 Kepley Road, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol accident report. Just before 7 a.m., Smith was traveling on Clarksbury Church Road when he pulled out in front and collided head-on with Byerly, who was traveling west on N.C. Highway 64 East. Smith failed to stop at a stop sign. The estimated speed Byerly was traveling at impact was 55 miles per hour. According to State Trooper B.D. Stalvey, Smith and his wife died on the scene. Byerly and his wife, Sharon Suttle Byerly, were transported to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. On Saturday, September 26, 2009, Cindy and Grant Smith were lost to family and friends.The couple met in Los Angeles, Calif. at the YMCA where they were both counselors. While on one of their camp trips Grant asked Cindy to throw him a "Hershey Kiss," and from that they shared the next 45 wonderful years together. They both earned college degrees, Cindy from Los Angeles Community College and Grant from the University of California at Davis. Cindy was a California native and Grant was from West Virginia, but the made their home in North Carolina for over thirty years.While living in Denton, Cindy was very active with ECA Development, chairing the Silver Valley Home Meals Project and volunteering for the Family Resource Center. She was also very concerned with animal welfare and was recently honored by the Silver Valley Civitans as their 2009 Distinguished Community Citizen. Talented in many areas, Cindy was an artist, quilter, gardener and musician.Grant was retired from the Dairy Industry, and worked in many areas of food and beverage packaging and production during his career. He was a man of many talents and loved to design and build. Grant was an avid fisherman and he and Cindy shared a concern for the environment. They both loved to travel and made friends everywhere they went.Most important to them both was family. Grant was known as "Bebop" an Cindy "Memom" to three granddaughters, McKenna, Sophia and new addition, Logan. The couple spent as much time as they could with the girls teaching them to fish and swim and showing them the importance of enjoying life. They were loving parents to daughter, Kimberly Smith Decker of Ocean City, Md.; and son, Martin Smith of Greensboro. They were very devoted to helping kids in need, serving as mentors and foster parents to many children whom they cared for as their own. They also delighted in the opportunity to host foreign exchange students for whom they became "American parents."Grant is survived by his mother, Cathleen Smith of Virginia; sisters, Pat Hall of West Virginia, Stella Sewell of Michigan and Brenda Beavers of Virginia; as well as many loving nieces and nephews. Cindy is survived by her sister, Muncie Marder of California; and her loving nieces and nephews.The memorial will take place at the couple's farm in Denton on Wednesday at 1 o'clock. A celebration of their lives for family and friends will follow.Briggs Funeral Home in Denton, N.C. is assisting the Smith family.
