All This Is That
- Review:
A collection of previously unreleased tracks from 1967-1980.
"All This Is That", the new Sea of Tunes boot, is out! It’s a superb
collection of outtakes, many were first heard during that "Busy Doin’
Somethin" convention several years ago. The songs on this disk are a major
sonic upgrade.
Some track info: *Time
to Get Alone – stereo instrumental, *Country Air – stereo mix, Narrow
stereo, with Brian count-in.
*All This is That – stereo, alternate version with sax solo. *Blueberry Hill
– stereo, alternate mix. *Just Once in My Life – stereo instrumental
track. *The Night was So Young – stereo vocal only version. *Shortenin’
Bread – mono alternate mix. PLUS MORE
Get The Boot
(2CD) - Review:
This is the real deal...Quality varies but the versions of "Back Home", "Walkin'"
and "I'm Going Your Way" are all excellent quality and fantastic "missing
links" in the Boys' recording history.
It's amazing to hear so much Beach Boys stuff I've never heard before on any
other boot. Essential! Audio quality varies from poor to excellent. Denny's
"I've Got A Friend" is the highlight. A real surprise is "Won't You Tell
Me". This beautiful song was a production by Murray Wilson and Richard Henn,
the creative geniuses behind the awful "Andrea" album! It is sung by The
Sunrays with Dennis Wilson in the backing vocals.

Lost and Found
(1961-1962)
-
This Disk features the
pre-Capitol
recordings of the Beach Boys. Before signing with Capitol Records, the Beach
Boys recorded six songs for producer Hite Morgan. Six songs would make a
pretty short CD, so the CD is padded out with alternate takes, audition
demos and two songs by "Kenny and the Cadets" with Brian Wilson on lead
vocals.
- The
most comprehensive
time-line of Brian Wilson's /
Beachboys "SMiLE" lp.
This CD Rom
is designed to be an interactive guide to the music and lyrics of Brian
Wilson and Van Dyke Parks circa 1966/67. More than just a collection of
MP3s, this is the original Dumb Angel/SMiLE project with all the extras
included! Comment from a fan:
Brian Wilson started work on Smile in the summer of 1966. Pet Sounds had
just been released but only had a cult following in the U.S...The
Beatles' Rubber Soul had just exploded
and Brian felt like they had beaten him again. Mere greatness was not
enough. He had to produce an authentic work of genius. Project Smile
has all the ingredients of a 1st class disk. So
in-depth with many surprises and
rarities.Also, includes *2 movies
not available elsewhere but on this CD-Rom:
Surf's Up: This clip was
originally filmed for the TV documentary "Inside Pop". It features Brian at
his home piano
performing the unreleased SMiLE song. Mrs O'Leary's Cow:
(Fire) This promo film was originally shot for
the Good Vibrations 45. It appears here for the first time.
SMiLE
(VigOtone)
(2CD)
- Comment from a fan: This is the best
rendition of the legendary Smile lp ever. Sure,
there's several versions around (providing you can find them) but I've
always been partial to Vigotone. I still remember
in the day, the various Beatle disks I picked up when I first started
collecting. Man, good stuff! If you want a pure Beachboys
experience, then you've gotta hear these for yourself.
Examples: Heroes
and Villains (7:06) This is actually the rare "Heroes and
Villains
- Part Two"!, Cool Cool Water (2:57) Longer than the version eventually
released. Prayer (5:05) Recording session. (Why is Mike Love such a dope?!),
18. Wonderful (2:09) Instrumental version., Heroes and Villains / Do You
Like Worms (0:49) Outtake section of H&V., Good Vibrations (7:41) Recording
session. Cabin-Essence (4:05) Outtake. (Sounds like an acetate.), Surf's Up
(6:28) Recording session of the instrumental track. The highlight of this
collection! Tones / Tune X (3:02) a recording session for the track
"Holidays"., and many more!
Smile;
a
Reconstruction
(Purple Chick)
-
Comment from a
fan: Yes, another Smile reconstruction and yet this one is certainly
great! Superb stereo sound during most of the tracks with mono sections here
and there due to the sources used with some interesting editing - Brian's
lost masterpiece. A disk worth hunting down.

A
little history
about the origin of the Sea Of Tunes
"Unsurpassed Masters" series:
The identity of the publisher
is known to Capitol Records and the Beach Boys. It happened during the
assembly of the "American Band" video documentary in 1984. The person
working on the documentary was given free rein in both the Beach Boys' and
Capitol's tape vaults.
The Tapes were taken from the vaults and dubbed down to digital stereo mixes
on video tape. Because this was an "official" project, the necessary
three-track, four-track and eight-track machines were easily obtained for
playback and mixing of the early tapes. Almost all of the tapes were copied.
The result is the
SOT
discs.

Landylocked
- Review:
One of the albums by Brian that
collectors go wild over. It's a major contribution of a pure songster
stretching his creative wings. Since the early 60's thru the latter part of
the decade, the Beachboys were the dream of Americana. Surfing, Summer Days
and youthfulness all seemed to go hand in hand with their music and the
times in which they performed. Landylocked is a brilliant piece of
work by a sometimes misunderstood individual. Tracks
include: You're Still A Mystery, Soul Searchin', It's Not Easy Being
Me, I'm Broke and several more.

Sweet Insanity
- Review:
This is the second version/mix of the
unreleased album
Sweet Insanity, which was intended for 1990 as a follow-up to
Brian Wilson's debut album from 1988. The sound quality here is surprisingly
good and is close to releasable quality. Every song is in great stereo here,
no apparent tape hiss or other noises. Only the first 12 tracks were
intended for Sweet Insanity, although the inclusion of "Country Feeling" is
still debated. Tracks 1-13: The second
version of the rejected second Warner Brothers album. Tracks 14-16:
Rare B-sides.
