  • After the School of Bauhaus closed, many Bauhaus students and instructors came to America .
    • Mies van der Rohe
      • Even though he had only known him for a few years, Alfred Barr, Jr. recommended Mies for a professorship in architecture at Harvard. Despite Barr’s attempt, the commission was not given to Mies van der Rohe. 
      • Mies van der Rohe later accepted a position at the Armour Institute in Illinois .
    • Bauhaus Students
      • Several Bauhaus students attended the Armour Institute in Illinois .
    • Walter Gropius
      • He was given a position at Harvard University .
  • Controversies
    • Aesthetic Reasons
      • They believed that this new architecture reflected neither regional, historical, nor national traditions.
      • Also, influential ideas of architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright who encouraged a very ornate and decorative style of architecture were still widely accepted.
    • Political Objections
      • While Americans still supported traditional art and never easily accepted the traditions of other countries, they had another reason for not readily being influenced by Germany .
      • America , like most of the world at the time, had disassociated itself from Germany after the German initiation of World War I.
