Hannes Meyer was born in
Switzerland
in 1889. Not only did he become a famous architect, but he was born into a
family of them. Hannes Meyer was partners with Walter
Gropius and replaced him in 1928 as the Director of the Bauhaus School. He
remained director for three years. Because of his communist’s views, Meyer
became responsible for the schools greater involvement in the local community.
Even though he was an exceptional architect, his views were despised by both Walter
Gropius and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. An
increase in the number of communist students attending the school threatened
Dessau
’s form of government forcing Meyer to leave his directorship. Throughout his
life, Meyer, as an architect, worked in
Germany
,
Switzerland
, and the
USSR
. On of Meyer’s most famous designs is the
German
Trades
Union
School
at Bernau. This building was constructed during Meyer directorship at the
School of Bauhaus.
