Henry-Russell Hitchcock was born in the year 1903 in
Boston
,
Massachusetts
. Hitchcock studied at
Harvard
University
where he met Philip Johnson. Hitchcock and
Johnson worked together to present the architectural technique, the
International Style, at the
Museum
of
Modern Art
. Hitchcock later became the director of the Smith College Museum of Art in the
year 1949. In 1968, Hitchcock became an instructor at the New York Institute of
Fine Arts. As an architectural historian, Hitchcock’s writings tended to focus
on the formal aspects of buildings rather than the political or social views. He
was later criticized for his “narrow-minded” views. Hitchcock is also
responsible for founding the Victorian Society, and at one time served as the
president of the Victorian Style in
America
. The Victoria Society is an organization that studies and appreciates Victorian
Architecture. Hitchcock died at the age of 83 of cancer. |
