James Monroe Grammer, born November 17, 1843 (this date taken from cemetery marker) in Lincoln County, Tennessee. His parents were John Grammer, Jr. and Sarah Grammer. He was the 10th child of 14 (to the best of my knowledge).
James Monroe married Susan E. Sawyer/Sawyers March 11, 1866 in Lincoln County, Tennessee. After the death of Susan (born 3/1846 - died May 2, 1904), James Monroe married Sophia Buckner January 10, 1906.
James Monroe Grammer enlisted in service November 8, 1862, was hospitalized August 18, 1863. He was a Private, Co. E. 23rd Battalion, TN. Infantry, Newman's Battalion - Captain J. T. (this T. could be an L.) Moore's Co. Became part of 5th consolidated Regiment, TN. Inf. April 9, 1865. (The information on military activities was sent to me by Rick Grammer of Cumming, GA, direct descendant of James Monroe Grammer.)
James Monroe Grammer and Susan Sawyer Grammer are interred in the Grammer-Waggoner (also referred to as Harper Cemetery) in Lois, Tennessee near Lynchburg.
Sophia Buckner Grammer applied for (widow's) pension March 12, 1929, but was rejected because regulations required widows to have been married prior to 1890. In 1937, she filed a second application for widow's pension because regulations then read "must have married prior to 1905". There is no indication of whether she received the pension or was rejected.
Sophia states in her application that she married James Monroe Grammer January 10, 1906 in Franklin County, Tennessee. She states that James Monroe Grammer died July 17, 1920. (His monument at the cemetery reads "July 19, 1920, so I'm not sure which is correct.) She gives his place of birth as Lincoln County, Tennessee but no date. It also states
Dated July 12, 1937
