Milford Grammer
(4 Nov 1838 - Aft 1919)

There has been some confusion on Milford's date of birth and to whom he was married. We thought we had found his marker at the Grammer-Waggoner Cemetery but decided it wasn't him. There was a marker there with the name "M.A. Grammer" 10/7/1846 - 9/22/1909 that we just knew was Milford, but now we think that is someone else. The information on his wife is that he married (lst) Peggy Locke and (2nd) Margaret Locke (sisters). Another descendant has his wife as "Eliza Ann Locke" which surely is a nickname for one of the above & I believe that to be Peggy because he applied for a Confederate Pension in 1903 and list his date of birth as November 4, 1838 in Bedford County, Tennessee and sources have said that he married Eliza Ann Locke February 8, 1859 in Lincoln County, Tennessee which would have to be a first wife since he married Margaret 10/13/1878. We believe that he lived until after 1919 because in 1914 some controversy arose about his pension. A tax payer, unnamed, sent a letter complaining that Milford did not need the pension because he was helping his children with it. Correspondence indicates that he was alive and trying to get his pension reinstated as late as 1919. I have no information on his place of burial. Milford's brothers, James Monroe Grammer and wife, Susan Sawyer Grammer, William Grammer and wife, Frances Burton Grammer, John Grammer and wife, Mary Lock Grammer, are all interred in the Grammer Waggoner Cemetery in the community of Lois, Tennessee near Lynchburg. James Monroe Grammer was married the second time to Sophia Buckner. Rick Grammer will probably give you this information.

Some other information that I recently received on Milford Grammer is as follows:

Pension File # 4912 Milford Grammer, (3) C.S.A.
Act of State of Tennessee passed March 10, 1891

Born in Bedford County, State of Tennessee, 4 November 1838, was living in Moore County when on 25 April 1903 he filed an application for Confederate Soldier's Pension.

Enlisted 12 March 1862, in Company F, 23rd (Newman's) Battalion Tennessee Infantry, C.S.A. at Lynchburg, to serve three years. On the roll of the company dated October 31, 1863 (last on file), he was reported present.

November 1863 at Woodville, Alabama was captured by Federal Troops, was paroled and returned home.

Claimed when General Bragg's Army was encamped at Tullahoma, Tennessee he was detailed to help make Breast works. From lifting heavy logs developed hemorrhoids which had continued to be a disability. A pension was allowed, but was stopped after a march 1914 letter from "A Tax-Payer" complained that Milford Grammer was using his pension to help his able bodied children, he had just sold a good farm, was amply provided for and did not need the pension. An investigation began. It appears that his pension was not reinstated although he provided information trying to prove he was not amply provided for or helping his children.

Contents: Application for Pension, Witness support forms, the letter from "A Tax-Payer" and correspondence about the complaint. There were letters concerning the reinstatement of his pension dated as late as 1920.

The above information is what I have on this particular Grammer Family at this time. I may have error's as all of us Grammer Family Historians have variations in dates and spelling of names. Thought you might like to have this in file in case others contact you for information. If you have anything on this family that can help me, would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks again for sharing with us.

P.S. I am the great-grandson of the above Peterson Henderson Grammer and Mary Ann Massey Evans Grammer.
