
"Roy H. Parks received his early education in the public schools of Lynchburg and at the age of nineteen years, having decided upon a professional career, commenced the study of law under the preceptorship of his father. On being admitted to the bar in 1897, he started practice in partnership with his father, this association continuing until the latter's entrance into the banking business in 1901, the younger man then forming a professional connection with James J. Bean, which still continues. Mr. Parks is known as one of the most able, astute and thoroughly learned of the lawyers practicing at the Moore county bar and has become a familiar figure in the courts here, but has still found time to devote to various other lines of endeavor. For some time he was editor of the Lynchburg Falcon, of which he has been associate editor since 1906. During the past ten years he has been city recorder of Lynchburg, and for fifteen years has been a member of the city council. His public services have been of a nature to advance the best interests of his city, the welfare of which he has ever had at heart. He has taken an interest in the work of various fraternal organizations, and at this
time is affiliated with Lincoln Lodge No. 50, Independent Order of Odd Fellows; Royal Arcanum Lodge No. 1458; Woodmen of the World Camp No. 379; Lynchburg Camp No. 12926, Modern Woodmen of America; and S. E. H. Dance Lodge, Knights of Pythias. In 1899 Mr. Parks was married Miss Eva Colsher, daughter of William H. and Sue Colsher, of Lynchburg, and to this union there have been born four children: Nell; Roy H., Jr.; Robert and Jack. Mrs. Parks died May 4, 1913."

Roy Parkes, Sr. Former State Senator, Dies Lynchburg, Tenn., Dec. 30 - (Special) - Roy H. Parkes, Sr., 72, prominent attorney and former state senator, died at 2:45 o'clock this morning at his home in Fayetteville. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 o'clock Friday morning at Raby Funeral Home, Fayetteville, by T.W. Meyhew. Burial will be in Lynchburg Cemetery. A son of the late R.A. and Susan Holt Parkes, he was a native of Lynchburg. He praticed law under his father and began his practice in Moore and adjoining counties at an early age. Several years later he formed a partnership with the late J.J Bean. The firm was dissolved in 1934 when Mr. Parkes suffered a stroke of paralysis. Later he moved to Fayetteville to make his home. Mr. Parkes served as county attorney for a number of years and represented Moore, Coffee and Bedford Counties in the state senate in 1919. He was first married to the former Eva Colshier, who died in 1913. In 1925 he married the former Laura Mai Waggoner, who survives. Also surviving, are a daughter, Mrs. Lacy Hobbs, Lynchburg; three sons, Clerk and Master Roy H. Parkes, Jr., Lynchburg, Robert Parkes, Florence, Ala., and Jack Parkes, Louisville, Ky.; three brothers, R.B. Parkes, Nashville, Judge Logue Parkes, Tampa, Fla., and Harry R. Parkes, San Antonio; and two sisters, Mrs. G.W. Pitts and Mrs. Pearl Bobo, Lynchburg. |
Roy H. Parks Roy H. Parks, age 72 years, passed away at his home on Jefferson St., Thursday morning at 2:45. He had suffered from a stroke 14 years ago. He moved to Fayetteville from Lynchburg about 14 years ago and was a member of the Odd Fellows and former member of the K. of P. Former Recorder of Lynchburg and a member of the State Legislature in 1919. He practiced law at Lynchburg as a Parks & Bean Law Firm. He was a partner, practicing law with Judge A.E. Sims. Funeral Services will be held Friday morning at 10:30, in the Raby Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Rev. T.W. Meyhew. Burial will be in Odd Fellows and Masonic Cemetery in Lynchburg. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Roy Parks, one daughter, Mrs. Lacy Hobbs, of Lynchburg; three sons, Roy H. Parks, Jr., Jack Parks, of Louisville, Ky; Robert Parks, of Florence, Ala.; two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Bobo, of Lynchburg, Mrs. Tom W. Pitts, of Lynchburg; three brothers, Judge L.L. Roy H. Parkes Sr. Rites Set Today FAYETTEVILLE, Tenn. - Funeral services for Roy H. Parkes, Sr., 72 attorney and former state senator, will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Raby funeral home here. T.W. Meyhew will officiate, Burial will be in the Lynchburg, Tenn., cemetery. Mr. Parkes died at 2:45 a.m. yesterday at his home here. He suffered a stroke of paralysis in 1934 and never fully recovered. A native of Lynchburg, he was son of the late R.A. and Susan Holt Parkes. He attended the public schools of Lynchburg and while still a young man, studied law in the office of his father, a widely-known Lynchburg attorney. After being admitted to the bar, he began the pratice of law in Moore and adjoining counties as a partner of his father. After his father retired, he formed a partnership with the late J.J Bean. While still in partnership with Mr. Bean, he formed a partnership with Lawson Myers of Fayetteville and divided the time between his offices here and at Lynchburg. In 1918, he was elected state senator from the 18th district, composed of Moore, Coffee and Bedford counties. While in the senate, his advice was sought frequently on matters pertaining to the constitutionality of bills being prepared for introduction in the legislature. As an attorney, he had a widespread reputation as a pleader before the state supreme court. On Dec. 27, 1899, he married Miss Eva Colshier, who died in 1913. His second wife, Mrs. Laura Mai Waggoner Parkes, whom he married in 1925, survives. He and Mrs. Parkes moved to Fayetteville in 1935. In addition to his widow, Mr. Parkes is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Lacy Hobbs, Lynchburg; three sons, Roy H. Parkes, Jr., Lynchburg; Robert Parkes, Florence, Ala.; Jack Parkes, Louisville, Ky; two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Bobo and Mrs. T.W. Pitts, both of Lynchburg, and three brothers, R.B.
