Would any of you know when and where Richard C. Varnell died? He lived and
worked in Jackson County, Bryan Township. He was born in 1872 in Arkansas, he
married Belle Williams (previous marriage name Reed) 1905. Between them they had
Richard Montgomery (1906), Hazel M. (Stilwell) (1909), and Veston George(1914)
(from whom I have descended). Richard's 1st marriage was to Rebecca A. Rutledge.
I am also looking for Virgie (b.1894), Nora (b.1896), and Thomas (b.1899), and
Jewel (b.1902). They are from either Richard's line or Belle's line. I perceive
that Richard C. Varnell died just before Veston's birth. Belle, immediately
after Richard's death, married John T. Davidson, and moved to Independence
County.

Ellen ORME. Vandelina was born in OK in 1882. She married John Harvey
PICKERING (from Texas) around 1900 in Okmulgee, OK. Her parents, John
and Rebecca LIDDEL lived on a dairy farm in Okmulgee. After her
husband's death, Vandelina moved in with her son and daughter-in-law in
Batesville. I believe that the LIDDELLS or BORDERS may have roots in
Independence County.

CHAMBERLAIN, GARDNER - Thomas CHAMBERLAIN( ? - 1911) and Mary Margaret
(GARDNER) CHAMBERLAIN( ? - 1907) made their home in or near Swifton,
Jackson County, Arkansas, of the late 1800s and early 1900s. It is
thought that Thomas CHAMBERLAIN was at one time sheriff of Jackson
County, AR. He was an engineer, and he died on 3 January 1911 in Cash,
Craighead County, Arkansas. Mary Margaret died in Grubbs, Jackson County,
AR, in 1907. There were five children born in Swifton, Jackson County,

I am looking for information on people and events from about 1815 to 1840.
To pinpoint the date, probably around 1835. I am looking for a family named
STRATTON. I found GEORGE V STRATTON listed twice on a Family Tree Maker
On-line Index. The dates were 1833 & 1834 Tax list. The township was Black
River.
My purpose is to find the father to Gabriel M Stratton. My early record of
Gabriel mentioned his ability to speak fluent Indian (Osage) in 1838 near the
MO-KS border. The 1850 census gave his birth date as 1815. I believe that
he must have lived in Arkansas in his early youth to be so fluent in Indian
language at 23.
A look-up in the tax list would be helpful, but I don't how much info it
could yield to relate to Gabriel. If there is someone in Independence
County who is also interested in the earliest years, please write.
Thanks.

Subject: MARSH
JOHN S. MARSH and his wife SARAH HELEN SEAL MARSH lived in Independence County
in 1950-60 and perhaps from 1900. I am looking for any information on the family
including his children: ZELLA MARSH, ROSCOE E. MARSH, HELEN MARSH and GLADYS
MARSH. I suspect that the children may have married while the family lived in
Batesville and I would appreciate any marriage information on any member of this
family so that I can make a possible current connection to descendants. Thanks.

H.M. (Herbert Madison) Snapp
I would like to have a death certificate for Herbert Madison Snapp, or
some type of official record. I am trying to get my information for the
DAR, and this is my only empty
blank for the forms. I don't have any official death records, only what
is
in the family Bible. He died March 9, 1940. The house where he died is
still there. I'm not sure what town it is considered to be in - it was
in
the country at that time. It is on the left side of the road between
Desha
and the top of the hill at Southside going toward Desha. There is a
rock
wall in front and at the side of the house that my dad and uncle
collected
the rocks for at a creek behind the house. There used to be a sawmill
next
to that house.
Thanks so much for your time and effort.

Subject: Lewis Sprouse/Sibbie Francis Book
I am looking for information on Lewis Sprouse of Sulphur Rock, Independence
County. He was married to Sibby Francis Book, daughter of Michael Book and
Agnes Shelton of Wayne County, Il. Evidently they moved to Arkansas in the
early 1900's and were both buried at the Sulphur Rock Cemetery. My father
Lewis Lawson Wood (b. 1917) remembers going to their farm by train and in the
last few miles of the trip being pulled by a mule from the side of the
tracks. From the map of the area it looks like there might be a separate
track up to the mines that he might have been remembering. My father stayed
with his Aunt Cora who was married to Daniel Bradford, and his uncle George
(Fred) Sprouse and his Aunt Mattie (Taylor). My father's mother's name was
Rosa Sprouse who married my Grandfather Allen Lawson Wood. Is there anyone
who is familiar with these names or even familiar with the history of Sulphur
Rock itself? I would appreciate any information. Thanks.

and this about all I know. I would also appreciate any info on the

Looking for Clingman descendants or information on Henry P. Clingman.
Henry P., a Yadkin Co., N. C. native, was supposed to be living in Independence

1860 census? Is he listed in any of the cemetery books? Would someone please check him
out for me? Thanks!
Dan Varnell November 23, 1997
I have some information on the Varnell ancestry in Independence,
Jackson, and White county. What I am in search of is, where did Richard
C. Varnell die? He lived and worked in Jackson County, Bryan Township.
In 1872 he was born in Arkansas. His father was William Varnell and his
mother was Mary Yount; both came from Tennessee. Richard's first
marriage
was to Rebecca Rutledge in 1893 in Independence County in the town of
Salado. In 1905, his second marriage was with Belle (whose previous
married name was Reed) in Independence County as well. Between them
they had Richard Montgomery Varnell (1906), Hazel M. Stilwell (1909),
and Veston George Varnell (1914) who was my grandfather. Some months
before Veston's birth, Richard C. Varnell died, but I don't know where.
Can any of you help me? Belle immediately married John T. Davidson, and
moved to Independence County. I am also looking for Virgie (1894), Nora
(1896), Thomas (1899), and Jewel (1902). I believe that Thomas [Reed]
was possibly the son of Belle and Mr. Reed and could have been adopted
by Richard C. Varnell.

I am researching both my mother's and my father's families. My father was
Walter Lewis Bowers, Jan. 1911 to March 1983, son of William Lewis "Bill"
Bowers (d. 1956 in Batesville, Independence County) and Pearl Luster (d. 1918
in Batesville). My mother was Martha Isabella Lewis, daughter of Elijah Adam
"E.A." Lewis (1884 - 1962, Independence County) and Fannie Meacham (1883 -
1963, Independence County). Elijah's father was Samuel Lewis of
Independence/Sharp counties who migrated to Texas with last contact being in
the Quinlan, TX area about 1915. Fannie's parents were Joel Robert Meacham
and Mary Isabella Wallace, both of whom died in Independence County.
Desperately seeking information on these last two.

Orville BRENT was born in Galesburg, KS in 1882. He moved to Batesville,
Ark. sometime after 1900. I believe he was married twice, with children
Edward Everett BRENT [1920], Albert Allen BRENT [1922], Lorene B. BRENT
[1924], and Nellie Mae BRENT [1926]. After the death of Orville's wife,
I believe Nellie Mae returned to Batesville, and cared for him until his
death. He was returned to Galesburg for burial in about 1946.
I would appreciate any corrections, or additional information about
Orville and his wife (wives?) and descendents.

Here is what I have and what I need:
My wife’s ancestor is Penelope Jeter Harrison who married John S.
Keith. When she died in 1865 she was living in Randolph County, AR. A
lawyer named URIAH M. ROSE of Batesville, Independence County filed a
document against her estate for $300. The document has Independence
County first and it was lined out and replaced with Pulaski County and
then it was filed in Randolph County.
I think this may have been a bill for the divorce between John Keith
and his first wife.
Does anyone have any info on Uriah or access to the court records of
either Independence or Pulaski Counties that could give me some help?
I believe the divorce would have been about 1850 - 1855.
Thanks for any help.
