Seeking information about a Batesville, Independence County resident. John Cadwallader Ringgold lived in Batesville from ca 1820 until his death in 1857. He was killed in a steamboat accident near Clarenden Arkansas June 17, 1857. I have a copy of an article from the Arkansas Gazette, Jan. 26, 1969 discussing Ringgold and his mansion in Batesville which was known as the Ringgold-Noland-Lawrence house. The home no longer stands. He was a member of the Arkansas Constitutional Convention in 1836 and represented Independence and Jackson Counties in first state senate. I am researching the life of Samuel Ringgold, of Washington County, Maryland. Sam had a son named John Cadwallader; but local records showed that he "died young, no date". I am trying to determine if the John Cadwallader from Batesville is in fact his son. I have been searching for Arkansas papers from June- July 1857 that may contain an article about the steamboat accident and a Ringgold obit, to no avail. Captain James P. Moody lists Batesville, Arkansas as his home when he was released from the Johnson Island, Ohio prisoner of war camp at the end of the Civil War. He was part of Gordon's 4th Arkansas Cavalry Regiment and was captured on October 25, 1864. Does anyone know of J.P. Moody or his brother Thomas Moody who was in the same Regiment in terms of their lives before and/or after the war?? Thomas Moody is my great grandfather.

In 1870 My Great Grandparents , John and Sarah Bolton Skelton and three children, Ellen, James & Betty, moved to Batesville from Hamilton CO. TN. I am looking for any other family of theirs that may have already been there. They would be Skeltons and Boltons. The Skelton Family moved again in 1871 to White County. They lived there for quite some time. Three more children were born. Frank, Susan and Minerva. Sarah died on Dec. 12, 1878 somewhere near Pangburn. She is buried in one of the cemeteries but I have not been able to locate her. The two girls, Susan and Minerva are buried by her. Any help will be most appreciated. I will exchange information also. I just started research in Independence County this past Thursday when I traced an Absolum (Absalim/Absalam) Stewart/Stuart there on the 1860 and 1870 censuses. Absolum, born about 1820-21, TN, is the son of an Elias Stewart out of SC. His wife Rebecca (???) and son Willis from TN were still with him on the 1860 census. My descent is from Elias' brother Charles Stewart. I am interested in all information on Absolum and his descendents, the identity of his wife Rebecca, corresponding with any of his descendents, and working with anyone researching Stewarts in Independence Co. I want to establish if any of the others there are in some way connected to this line. I have extensive information on Absolum's ancestry and lateral lines.

Perrin, Polston,Carr,Dunn Need information on family. My grandfather's name was Aaron Polston 1886-1957 he was buried at Harmony Cemetery in Independence County. He had been married to Locey Lance Polston and had two children Aaron Pete Polston and Bobbie Louise Polston before he met my grandmother. This is the only information on my grandfather except he had 2 brothers, Charlie Polston and Fred Polston 1892-1968 (I think). My grandmother's name was Beaulah McDaniels she had a total of 5 children. Rachel Perrin Sanders, Stella Mae Perrin Joseph, Tillman McDaniels, Carl "Redius" McDaniels and my mother Gaynell "Genell" Perrin Carr Cook. My great grandmother was Mae Prince Perrin and she was married to Will Perrin along with Beaulah they had 4 sons. My gg grandmother was Lou Cason Perrin 1840-1925 I believe she was married to an Eddie Perrin. I get confused at this point because there is a story that Eddie Perrin fought in the civil war and never returned home so Lou Cason Perrin remarried 7 years after the war. Soon after Eddie Perrin shows up and takes their children never to be heard from after that. Any information on the Polston or Perrin family would be greatly appreciated.

Are there any descendants of a Jesse JOHNS and sister, Anne, out there? Don't know if or who she may have married. They were half brother and sister to my great grandfather, Arthur GREEN. This was in Batesville, Independence Co AR. Jesse JOHNS and wife, ?, and two children visited Arthur and my g-grandmother GREEN in Bethany, OK. in the late 1930's or early 1940's. Arthur's mother's name was Sarah (maiden name, GREEN). Do not know the name of the father of these three people. Arthur GREEN was born May 29, 1872, Sulphur Rock, Independence Co. Mother was unmarried at the time of birth. Our family was told Mr. JOHNS was married at that time. So, don't know if he divorced or his wife passed away. Years ago, prior to the1930's, the family was given to understand that "Mr." (?) JOHNS and Sarah GREEN married at some point in time. Also, understood they had more children. So, it could be Jesse and Anne JOHNS were these children. Therefore, they would not be half siblings after all. Jesse and Anne were both quite a bit younger than Arthur. Here's another tidbit - Arthur's mother, Sarah GREEN, her parents raised Arthur from quite young, as "Mr" JOHNS did not want him in the home. Would like to find some descendants of these people. Recently found information that my father's family lived in Independence County, Arkansas. There are two land records: My grandfather's father or brother William G. Bruce owned 80 acres July 1, 1859 and my grandmother's father William E. Strickland owned 40 acres Nov 15, 1893. My grandfather Elijah Hamilton Bruce was married to Sarah Hester Strickland, my grandmother January 1886. They had 4 children: Walter Millard Bruce, Maude E. Bruce, Margaret Catherine Bruce, and Commodore Dewey Bruce (my father). Margaret C. was born in 1894 in Arkansas but Commodore D. was born in 1898 in Texas. Family migrated to Kansas City, Kansas and grandparents, Walter M. and Commodore D. are buried there. Elijah's brother, William G. Bruce married Sarah's sister Virginia Strickland February 1885. Possible children: Carl Bruce, Mary Bruce, Claud Bruce, Nettie Bruce. Family migrated to Saskatchewan and British Columbia Canada. Have much family data to share.

I am looking for info on the COLEMAN family in Ind. cty, Ar. My grandfather is Cecil Gordon COLEMAN, b.1916, location unknown. He was the son of a Sam COLEMAN, last location known to be of Rosie, AR. Cecil married Mildred KIRBY, b. 8-1919, d. 10-1983, buried in Maple Springs cmty., and had two children. Ronald NMI, b.1937 in Rosie AR, d. 1987 in Mphs, TN., and Shirley Jane, b. ? in Rosie, AR, and d. 1984 in San Benito, TX, buried in Maple Springs cmty. My grandparents operated a gas station and cafe in Oil Trough, AR, c. 1968. The business was demolished by the tornado of 1967 or 1968. My grandfather was also a rural route carrier between Newport & Batesville for many years, retiring in 1980. My grandparents were members of the Oil Trough Church of Christ. Additionally, COLEMAN family members were known to live in Rosie, Lafferty (sp.) Creek in Cushman. KIRBY family members were known to live in Sandtown, and Southside. Am looking for the parents of Angeline Jane CURTIS MAIR, she was born 23 Sept 1857, near Batesville, AR., her obit. said: her father was Wm. S. CURTIS, it also stated that he was killed during the civil war, that her mother then went to IL. & died 2 yrs. later. I find a Angeline living with Madison CURTIS on the 1860 Independence Co. census. In checking some records it almost looks like Madison was the one who died during the war, as Wm. S. was granted guardianship on some of Madison children (those I found named where boys). Names of siblings on the obit. (1917) were: Green, living in Hamilton, IL.; George, living in Hamilton, IL.; William, living in Pleasant Plains, AR.. The obit. said Angie had moved to Valley Falls, KS. with her sister Mrs. Campbell in 1872. Anyone know anything about these families?

Benjamin A. WELDON 28 years of age born in TN. married to a Sarah 38 Years of age also born in TN. The following kids are listed in the household:
John W. WELDON age 8 Benjamin F. WELDON age 6 William C. WELDON age 4 Mary E. WELDON age 2 Martha LANE age 16 Brad LANE age 15
Because of the difference in Benjamin and Sarah age it is belived Benjamin was her second husband and the two LANE kids was from her first marriage. Benjamin and family was on the Tax rolls untill they ended in 1858 and I can find no trace of him after that. I belive his son John W. went to Pulaski County and was a farm laborer on the 1860 census down there. The only problem I have is the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census says he was from GA. Anyone researching this family I would like to exchange information with you.

It is thought William David was from TN. His father died while William David was a boy and the only offspring. His mother remarried a GRIST or GIST and had a large family. It is thought William and Mary Jane married in Independence County. They lived in the Oil Trough area. Would like to share information with anyone with information on any members of this family.

My great grandparents John & Sarah SKELTON are seen in the July 7, 1870 Census of Independence Co. AR Batesville P.O. in Fairview Township. They left Hamilton Co. TN sometime after April 13, 1870 apparently, and arived in AR just as the census was taken. Elizabeth seen in the census was one yr. old and she was born in TN on date shown, which tells me the time of their departure from TN and arrival in Ar. There are two other childen in the Census, Ellen 9 and James 4. Ellen was by Sarah's previous marr. to an R. B. McCULLOUGH killed in the C. W. Another child F was born on May 22, 1871, and Susie on Sept. 7, 1873. I am trying to find proof of their birth. Was it in Independence Co. or after their move to White Co. where Manervy/Minerva was b. & d. on Dec. 5, 1878 and Sarah d. a few days later on Dec. 12th. Susie died less than a year later on Oct. 3, 1879. John is seen in the 1880 Census of White co. in Jackson Township in House #27. I have been told it is in the extreme North Central part of the County. would anyone know if it's near the Fairview Twsp. in Independence Co. I have not been able to find the Cemetery Sarah and the two girls are interred in, in White Co. Has anyone seen them in any cemeteries there? John left White Co. in Jan. 1882 and moved back to TN where he remarried and had more children. He died in Rome, GA and is interred in the Oakland Cem. there. Any help is appreciated. Searching for information on parents and siblings or other researchers of the BURCH line. My grandmother, Sophia Savannah BURCH, was born 17-February-1888 in Magness, Independence, AR. On Sophia's birth certificate her father is listed as William Noble BURCH and her mother as Allie FURNER. Sophia supposedly had two brothers and one sister, all older than her; but their names unknown. Sophia's mother died when she was two and she was separated from her father and siblings. Sophia's parents both may have been school teachers.

HARDIN: Larkin L. H. Hardin, age 34, son of John Smith Hardin and Talitha Hensley Hardin, and his young family were living at Black River Township, Independence Co., AR on the 1860 Census. On October 15, 1861, his father, John, was appointed gdn of Larkins minor children. How did Larkin die? Are there any newspapers in the area that I could search? My great+ grandfather, unknown Hardin, drowned in the White River while rafting logs during this time period. Both had daughters named Lucy and a son named James; I would like to either tie them together or discount this branch of the family. Would appreciate any clue's or responses to this 50 year old mystery.

I am searching for the family of Freman Daggett b. Jun 1833 in Arkansas, d. Oct 1903 in Big Bottom Twp. He served in the Civil War 38th Infantry along with his brother S.F. His brother, Jacob, fought as a Union soldier. He had brothers named Sylvester, Jacob R, John, James, and Robert E. He married Mary Ann ? about 1860. In 1900 he was living with his only surviving child Henry A. in Big Bottom Twp. I had a reference to an obituary for Oct. 16, 1903 in a local paper, but the paper is not named. His son Henry married Nancy E. Perry in 1892. She is listed in the census records as born in Tenn. I would like information on any Perry's in Ind. Co., also. JACKSON, abt.. 1835 TN or Wales, and Mary Ann WALLACE KNIGHT abt.. 1835 TN( daughter of Alberto WALLIS and Ann MOORE), married Feb. 8, 1869 in Independence County, Arkansas. They had one son Thomas Walter Jackson b. 11 Dec. 1870. I cannot find any record of this marriage except the bible entry of Walter JACKSON, his son. G. W. JACKSON is said to have died in a mining accident in Arkansas but I can't find any information on his death or when and where he is buried. Mary Ann WALLACE married 1. John KNIGHT Nov. 28, 1861 in Independence County, Ark, in a private residence by a pastor of the Methodist - Episcopal Church. John KNIGHT had two daughters, Mahala and Rebecca when he married Mary Ann WALLACE. He had one daughter, Martha, with Mary Ann. John KNIGHT is said to have died in the Civil War leaving a large estate. Wm. Henry WALLACE at one point was granted letters of administration, and Mary Ann KNIGHT was listed as Administrix of the estate. Mary Ann KNIGHT married 2. Stephen JONES May 8, 1866 in Independence County, AR at the res. of Mr. BARR near Batesville by a pastor of the Methodist - Episcopal Church. They had one son, William JONES b. c.1868 AR, and I don't know if she was divorced or widowed in this marriage. G. W. JACKSON was her third marriage.

Looking for any information on my gg.grandparents, Ben D. Arnold and Frances Saunders Arnold who lived in Independence County as well as Lawrence County around 1880-1890. Ben was the son of Jesse Arnold and Elizabeth Totty of Independence County. Do not know anything about Frances Saunders family. Found Ben and Frances in the Lawrence County 1880 census with two young children, Olive and Ben Jr. They were 23 and 25 years old respectively in 1880.
Around 1887 my g.grandfather William Edward Arnold was born in Batesville. Not sure of other children born between 1880-1887. William was orphaned about 5 years later and went to live with Ben's brother, James Henry Arnold. Ben and Frances died a day apart of unknown causes and nothing is know of what happened to the older children. Possibly disease took them?
Would like to know cemetery location of Ben and Frances Arnold. What caused their death. What became of the older children. And possibly any information on the Jesse and Elizabeth Arnold family history.

Researching James J. Kennedy who purchased land in Independence Co., Ark., in 1857 and 1859 from US government. Is he the same James Kennedy who was in Greene Co., Ark., in 1840 and in Tennessee earlier? His son Cantrell Bethel Kennedy is my great great grandfather.

I am looking for information on a John Wesley McMurtry. He was buried in Independence around 1914. I was wondering if anyone had a index of the cemeteries.
