Hi, I'm looking for relatives or information on my great-great-grandfather
Henry Jefferson Bryant, born 1843 in Independence Co., Batesville to be exact.
He was married to Elizabeth Bostic in or around 1868. I have been told that the
courthouse burned and all the records destroyed. I would like a copy of
their marriage certificate and his birth certificate if anybody has one. Does
anyone have any relations with these people? I would really appreciate this.
I was also told that he was married to an Abigail Wills or Willis and that
sometime during his life he changed his middle name to Clay.

Looking for information on Emily Nelson and Licurgus McElroy. They were the
parents of William Gideon McElroy b. March l876 in Ar. and he married Letitia
Jane Kent in Batesville, Independence County, AR. in l897 and had 6 children
while living there till about l920 when they moved to Texas. Letitia Jane Kent
McElroy born l877 Ar.was the daughter of John Albert Kent and Elinor Elizabeth
Ham Kent. Jewel Emily McElroy born l90l wrote a letter to her Aunt Grace (her
mother's sister) in l9l8 and this letter was written from Cushman, Arkansas and
I am wondering where in Independence county Cushman was located or is
located???Jewel died after she wrote this letter in l9l8 and we have not found
her burial place and was wondering if there might be a cemetery in the Cushman
area where she might have been buried. She also had a brother born in l9l0
named Licurgus B. McElroy who died at 6 months of age in l9ll and we have not
located where he was buried either. Have checked out all the cemetery listings
that are online for the county and have not found them. Some of the extended
family members were buried in the Liberty cemetery in the Gainsboro Township
area as well as some in the Lee's Chapel cemetery. Other children of William
G.McElroy and Letitia J.Kent McElroy were Clarence A. McElroy b. l899
Batesville,Ar. (my husband's father) and siblings Edna,Ollie and Edythe. Emily
Nelson McElroy was born probably about l850 probably in Alabama and is believed
to have been part Cherokee. Licurgus McElroy was b. in l85l in St.Francis
county,Ar. to parents John McElroy and Mary Stevenson McElroy. Besides William
Gideon McElroy (their first child and grandfather to my husband) they had
another son named Levi I. McElroy born in December l878 Ar. He also married in
either l909 or l9l0 in Batesville, Independence county,Ar. to Hattie Newman.
They also had children born there and later moved to Texas with brother William
G. and family about l920. Emily Nelson is believed to have had a brother named
Gideon and sisters named Fannie and Missouri. It is possible that Fannie might
have married a man named Tidwell and Missouri may have married a man named
Harris. Any help anyone can give me on this would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks so much in advance for any help . Sincerely, Beverly McElroy

Subject: Forgotten Civil War Soldiers--F.Price, Forsuth, Pemberton, Jones,
Dunn, Tatum
I am sending you this because I believe some of the men were from Independence
County. I am looking for anyone who knows about this. I live in Lonoke County
and am /was related to the Pearce family there. J.D. Pearce who marched with
the 8th Arkansas was my great great grandfather. He was later a gunsmith here
in Lonoke County. Fielding Price was from the other side. His descendents left
White County and went into Independence County we believe. I would love to hear
from more of them. Price and others captured by the Union forces 11-22-1864 in
Woodruff County On 11-22-1864 in Woodruff County, Fielding Price of White
County Arkansas was taken prisoner by the Union forces. It is now believed it
was the 61st Illinois out on a patrol that picked the men up. With Price at
that time were five others. In the Rebels' Hell published in 1993 which Tom
Ezell ,noted Civil War Historian in Arkansas, suggested I read, it lists Lt.
Fielding Price Of White Co., Lt. J. Pemberton, Lt. A.W. Jones, Pvt. Wm Tatum,
Pvt. John Forsuth, and Pvt. Wiley Dunn. They were sent to the Union Prison in
Little Rock and are listed at being admitted on 11-25-64. Price died of variola
(smallpox) on Feb. 1, 1865. Forsuth died of the same on May 10, 1865.
Pemberton, Jones, Tatum, and Dunn took the oath on May 7, 1865 to be released.
Of all these men, Pemberton said only that he was with Davis Co. Jones said he
was with 1st Ark. Rifles, and everyone else is listed as unassigned. I am very
interested in connecting with the descendents of these men to see what oral
history was pasted down to them regarding their ancestors' time in the Yankee
Prison in Little Rock. Please feel free to contact me. Pemberton signed the
papers for Fielding Price's widow, Mary called "Polly", to receive a
one time payment of $25 in 1897. Mary Price stated he was with the 1st
Arkansas.( Fielding was my great grandmother's grandfather. His family had
floated the White River into Arkansas in 1836 having originated in South
Carolina.) I believe there is more to this story than there is recorded history
for. Thanks to any and all for suggestions and information. I am very
interested in solving what as been something of a family mystery for many
years. Linda Acrey Lonoke. Arkansas

Subject: Sulfur Rock Veterans Home/Poor House 1895-19??
My name is Sam Duncan. I have been working to track down information on John P.
Duncan and Mary Jane Barnes (d/o Moses Barnes and Rebecca Benton). They were
married 6/7/1863 in Independence County AR. John P. b. 1838 was the son of
Moses F. and Jane Duncan. The family is in the 1850 and 1860 Indep County
Census Ruddell twp. John P. fought in the Civil war and was wounded and
captured in the fall of Little Rock on Sept. 10, 1863. He was wounded in the
battle and spent a year or so in Alton and Rock Island. After his release we
have no record of him and Jane. We know they had family in Indep County
(Barnes). The next record I have is John P. taking his military pension in
Independence County, living at Victor AR Feb 27, 1896. He could not work
because of the wound on his leg from the war, so he lived out his post-war
years as a very poor man. My dad says John P. was eventually admitted to Sulfur
Rock (veterans home). This was a very bad place to be. He says John P. died at
Sulfur Rock ca. 1900 and was buried in a "potter's" grave. I have
found Sulfur Rock Cemetery burials on the Internet. None of them list John P.
Duncan. QUESTIONS: Do any records exist from Sulfur Rock? Was there such a
place? Does anyone have 1870 or 1880 Census records showing John P. Duncan and
Mary Jane (Barnes) Duncan family (children) in Independence County. Does anyone
know what township Victor would have been in? I appreciate any help I can get
on this. This is a present for my dad. He never really knew much about John P.
before I started digging. Thanks, SAM DUNCAN Margaret

In a copy of the Thursday, December 27, 1962 Jackson County Democrat (which is
next to Independence County) I found this tidbit in a column called "Local
Items from Newark": "Mr. and Mrs. Houston Rutledge arrived last week
from San Antonio, Texas to spend Christmas with Houston's parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Cecil Rutledge and the Wilburn Rutledge family." Does anyone know who Cecil's
father may have been? I'm trying to figure out how they fit into my Rutledges,
originally from Newark. This newspaper once was in the possession of my
grandfather, Harry Rutledge who moved to Upshur County, Texas.

Searching for a Nancy (?) CAMPBELL who shows up in the 1850 Independence County
Census, Greenbriar Twp. It shows she had daughters Sarah 20, Rebecca 17, son
John H. 11, with Joseph C. H. LANE 17, Milla LANE 8 living with her in dwelling
623. Nancy could possibly be my gr gr grandmother and John H. Campbell possibly
my gr grandfather. There is no other data on Nancy that I have found and was
wondering if anyone has a connection to her and her family. This census shows
her 55 and son John H. 11, which would fall into my time frame for Nancy and
John H. to be my gggrandmother and my gr grandfather, John Henry Campbell b.
December 19, 1838, Phillips Co., ARK. I have data on John Henry Campbell (gr
grandfather) from his marriage certificate dated April 2, 1863 in Breckenridge
Co., KY on forward until his death in 1898 at Cloverport, Breckenridge Co., Ky.
If anyone has a connection or question, please contact me at

documented. Thanks, Faye Erwin

I am trying to find McNealy family members in the Batesville area. My

McNealy and Mary Josephine (Wright?) McNealy. My grandmother has a brother,
Paul McNealy that lived in Batesville from the 1940-1980's or more. He lived in
the old section of town and had antique clocks in his home. I remember visiting
with them as a child with my mother Lenore Smith Dobbs and my father Ray Wright
(Spur) Dobbs. I am trying to find out who my great grandparents were and where
they were from and also who their parents were. Is there anyone that knows any
of these people and could help me. Thank you for your time.

I am trying to research my husbands family. His grandmother Bessie Hays (Hayes)
was born in Pleasant Plains, AR Independence CO in 1896 according to the family
Bible. She first married a William Ray Beard ( date unknown). He was born in
Minneapolis, MN. I am hoping she appears with her parents on the 1900 or 1910
census and any siblings she may have had at the time. The Bible said her
fathers name was Robert H. Hays and her mother's first name was Maggie. My
husband's brother seems to think she may have had a brother by the name of Eli.
I have some information on their descendants and will gladly share. We believe
that after getting married they moved to the Jackson CO. area. We appreciate
your help. Thank You. Shelley Owens Woods
