(1)  Dear Ms. Liz Burns Glenn:

 

My great grand father George Washington Mills moved to "near" Cave City, Arkansas sometime between 1851 and 1854.  Family records show that he bought a farm "Near" Cave City.  Since the vicinity of Cave City seems to have been in several different counties from the time frame that he lived there (About 4 to 6 years), it is difficult to know if his farm was in Independence county or some neighboring county.  A few years before the civil war he was back in West Tennessee because a couple of his sons joined the confederate army from Carroll County, Tennessee.  I do not mind driving from my home in West Tennessee to Cave city (About 150 miles).  However, I would like to get your idea on what counties it would be best to check for land deed, etc.  Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

(2)  In the 1860 census there is a family Neverson F. and Martha J. Sutton and their children. They also had three children with them that are related to me. John, Isaac and Mary Skinner. Mary was my Great Grandmother. I am trying to find any information that might help me identify the parents of these 3 children. They were all born in AR. But I do not know where they lived. Thanks for your response. I am researching a Ward family for a friend.

John R. Ward and his wife Elizabeth were on the 1860 Census but neither appear on the 1870 Census but a child does who is living with a half-brother. I am wondering if John died and Elizabeth remarried.

(5)   William and Laura Long Qualls family on 1880 census for Independence (error as Quarts)

 

Hi,

      The Qualls family moved to Gainsboro, Independence, AR  1870s from Hardin, Co., TN.  One daughter, Fearby (Ferbia) Qualls Loyd died there on 7 August 1874.  Her husband was William Daniel Loyd who remarried Fearby's younger sister, Jane, at Fearby's deathbed request.  William Daniel Loyd and family moved to Texas soon after marriage,

      William Daniel Loyd's sister, Nancy V. Loyd age 17, was living with the Qualls family on 1880 census for Gainsboro, Independence Co., AR

      I am wondering if you know of this family and especially about Nancy V. Loyd.

(6)  I am looking for birth records and death records for my grandmother's family.  The name is Carlisle and has also been spelled Carlile.  Shebascum (Baccum or Bascum or Boss) and Louisa Bain Carlile came to Arkansas around 1900 or so.  I find them in the 1910 census and my grandmother was born in 1896 or thereabouts.  Her name was Iva Alice Carlile and she married David G. Dunn around 1912-1914 somewhere in Arkansas.  I know that they lived in Greene Co., for a while before moving to OK.  My mother was born in Paragould Arkansas in 1919.  Her delayed birth certificate states 1918 but in the 1920 census she is just 6 months old.  I was not able to enter anything on your site for Independence.  So, was wondering if you could help me find my grandmothers family.  They had a slew of kids.  Any help appreciated.  I know that Shebascum and Louisa are both buried in Independence Co., ARK.  Would love to know anything more about them.  Thanks for any help.

(9)  Dear Mrs Glenn,

 

           Seeking information on Reverend Jerome J Colson, born 1855 in Independence County Arkansas. He is listed in the Independence County 1860 census along with his father, James J Colson age 30 born in Tenn, and his sister, Lizzie Colson age 2. His mother IS NOT listed which leads me to believe she died in childbirth when Lizzie was born or shortly thereafter. In 1878 Jerome married Rosalee Rowland. In 1900 he married second Anna McLendon. Reverend Colson was active in the ministry for 35 years, all in Arkansas. Upon retiring he lived in Hermitage Arkansas until his death in 1944. He is buried in Oakland Cemetery at Warren Arkansas. Reverend Colson is my wife's great grandfather. We are trying to learn the name of his mother and any information relating to the parents of his father. Thank you for your help.

Ann Meacham married Elisha Columbus Gray (born 1830) in the 1850’s or 1860’s.

Liz--

Do you know of any volunteers in Independence County who will photograph grave markers?  I have two ancestors who died in Independence County.

From what I have seen online, it appears that one is buried at the Egner Cemetery in or near Salado.  I have not yet determined where the other one is buried, but he appears to have died in or near Pleasant Plains.

Do you have information on the Stewart Family?

David was the son of James F. Stewart b. TN and Dicy b.GA.

 

I would like to find probate or other identifying documents on James or Dicy.

Believe James d. (age 60 on 1870)between 1870 - 1880 Ind Co AR

Dicy is with son Felix Grundy on the 1880.

She is 71 on 1880.

Felix is found 1900,1910,1920 Searcy Co AR.

 

I believe Mary Ann Stewart who married Richard Taylor Dec 1851 Meigs Co

TN is the dau of James F. & Dicy, who were also from Meigs Co TN.

We cannot find Mary Ann or James F & Dicy on the 1850 Cenus ... James

should be on 1850 AR as Felix was born in AR.

 

Richard & Mary Ann are in Independence Co AR in 1870, Scott Co in 1880

and living next door to some of this Stewart Family.

Mary Ann is buried in Weeks Cem, Scott Co AR and Richard goes to IT about 1896

 

Can you help me and I can furnish additional information on Stewarts & Taylors.

John Logan Jones born 1831 in N.C. Died in 1906 and is buried in Palestine Cem.

Daughter Mary Jane (Jones) Wilkins Abt. 1901- 1997 and is buried in Palestine Cem. Squire F. Wilkins is her husband.

 

It is said that Mary Jane ( Jones ) Wilkins was in care of the Burrell Jones bible. Burrell is John Logan's Dad. Would like to contact any living  relatives to Mary Jane.

Hi! I’m very interested in Arkansas Civil War history, and I am wondering where exactly (on a modern map) was fought the Battle of Waugh’s Farm (Feb 1864)? All I know is that it is was fought north of Bethesda in Independence County. I notice from your ICHS web site that there is an article about the battle in the July 1961 edition of the Independence County Chronicle. Does it mention (or show in a map) where the battle occurred?

I am looking for descendants of David C. Melton and Mahala C. (Jones) Melton.  David Melton was born about 1845 in Tennessee and died in Newark, Independence Co., Arkansas on March 23, 1901.  I believe Mahala Jones was also born in Tennessee.  They were married in 1868 in Decatur County, Tennessee.  Their children are Wesley, b. 1877; Fannie, b. 1879; Vester, b. 1881; Minnie A., b. 1886; Joel L., b. 1888; Frederick P., b. 1891; and Urmer (sp?), b. 1895.  In 1890 this family was living in Craighead Co., Arkansas.  After David's death in 1901, Mahala married a J. M. Kennedy in 1904 in Arkansas.

I need info on a possible relative of his by the name of John Hogan Bean who is believed to have moved from Mississippi to Arkansas sometime before the above date. I am a granddaughter of Asia Blaylock.  We have no record of Asia's Birth of Death.  I have found an Asia Blaylock born March 1, 1859 in Tennessee, and a death record for one Asia Blaylock died in Knob, Arkansas on November 23, 1902.  This could be my grandfather, but I am unable to search the  records further.
 
My parents are dead and I have tried to find this information from every source.  Asia Blaylock was married to a Millie Josephine Morris.  She lived with my parents in Virginia, but she died when I was three years old.  I have no source other than the web to search.

I am searching for information on James Isaac McGee who lived in Independence County in 1920. He was born July 7 or 12, 1880 (James has given both dates for his birthday) in Crawford County, Arkansas to James B. McGee and Phoebe (Adams) (THOMAS) McGEE. James lived in Van Zandt Co., TX after he married and moved back to Arkansas around 1915 based on where their children were born. James operated a ferry on the White River for several years and would also dive for pearls. I have a picture of both the ferry and of James in his diving bell suit with his wife, Margarette Alifar (Johnson) McGee, holding his air hose and piles of mussel shells around them. Does anyone know where the ferry was located on the White River or the name of the crossing? James and Margarette left Independence County sometime between 1925-1927 and moved to Benton County, Arkansas where he died in 1932. I welcome any information from Independence County on James Isaac McGee. Thank you.
