Pilot International was founded in 1921 as a volunteer service organization. The river boat pilots of the early 1900s inspired the name; these pilots were admired for their ability to steer a "true course" through calm or troubled waters.

Today, more than 500 Pilot and Anchor clubs in the US, the Bahamas, Japan and Singapore have approximately 25,000 members. Over the past 80 years, local, national and international communities have benefited from Pilots' work to improve quality of life.

Pilot International's exclusive service campaign, BrainMindersTM, focuses on providing brain facts and injury prevention education to the general public, children, caregivers and professionals in the community.

BrainMindersTM was introduced in 2001. The BrainMindersTM Buddies program structures injury prevention "Play Safe, Play Smart" through the story "Wise Old Owl and His Fuzzy, Funny, Smart and Sunny BrainMinderTM Buddies".

The Pilot Club of Huntsville presents the BrainMindersTM Buddies program to local schools and preschools, reinforcing and teaching children about safety. Puppet BrainMindersTM Buddies teach about wearing helmets, wearing seat belts, looking both ways before crossing streets, and following playground and swimming rules. Brain injury prevention principles are reinforced through BrainMindersTM Buddies coloring books the children receive to take home.
