Pinhook Creek was formed in the spring of 1986 to provide entertainment for a church youth rally in Huntsville Alabama. The band had four members and no name. It was dubbed "Pinhook Creek" by the rally organizer. We were each given a nickname. From left to righ in the picture are Mick (Mickey Elkins), Stick (Tony Anderson), Hick (Dale Monks), and Stump (Bobby Taylor). Wow! Bobby had hair all over back then.
Pinhook Creek is a local creek running through the city of Huntsville with a history of questionable water quality so it was meant to be a joke. To see the real origins of Pinhook Creek click here.
One thing led to another. Next they played for the senior's group at the church, then the Christmas party. Pretty soon the band was being requested to play for parties and group gatherings.
Today the group has six members. Bobby Taylor and Tony Anderson are charter members with John Elrod banjo, David Thier dobro, Sylvia Dean fiddle, and Jimmy Rowell bass. We also have several others that stand in from time to time. Some of these are Barry Pollard (fiddle), and Austin James (Bass). Jan Toomey also played Dobro with us for several years and Patty Brown played bass for several years and was part of the band during the making of the CD.
The band has played for Huntsville's Concerts In The Park, Trade Days, Panoply; Madison's Gazebo Concerts; Guntersville's Summer Series; and Mooresville's Walking Tour. The band has played for many school events like East Clinton School's Chautauqua festival and Huntsville's Academy of Science and Foreign Language annual chili festival. The band is also a favorite for company parties and picnics. The band has played for companies and organizations such as NASA, SCI, and Hughes. The band has played several times for Shelbyville's WLIJ radio remote program from Lynchburg Tennessee. Pinhook Creek has also played at the Longbranch Opry in Arab Al the same night Nashville Bluegrass Band was there. That was lots of fun!
