At-Home Developmental Therapy
Updated June 26, 2000
Abby is currently 31 months old and weighs just under 20 pounds. Her
gross-motor and fine-motor skills have become hard to judge since there
is such a difference from one skill to another. I will try to cover everything
in this page. If you have any question, please
e-mail me.
She has taken up to 15 steps on her own. The main obstacle for her is her
balance. She can stand up from a sitting or crawling position without
assistance, and she will initiate walking without being asked. She continues to
climb on just about anything she can.
She has started showing interest in some fine motor activities that the
therapist introduced a while back which is allowing development of her fine
motor skills. She will now put a ring on a peg and can stack 3 blocks.
She is also making down motions with a crayon. She has really become
interested in books. She knows the sign for book and is constantly asking
to be read to. If she gets no response with the sign, she will bring a book
to be read. This has allowed us to work on picture association, naming, and
vocabulary.
We have switched to Pediasure supplement instead of KinderKal because it is
more available, and by introducing a different drink with different flavors we
are hoping that we can encourage her to drink her supplement from a cup
like she does with juices. She would only take KinderKal from a bottle and we
are trying to transition her to a cup. She can only drink from a regular cup
since her sucking action is not coordinated enough to work the spill-proof top.
She has been drinking from a straw but she leaks some of the drink while she
is exhaling before she can swallow.
She has now learned the signs for book and made her own sign for dog. She does
patty-cake and she will clap her hands when she hears the song "If you're happy
and you know it". She has a new speech therapist who is really working actively
with picture exchange communications. This is in supplement to her vocalization
which now include S and M sounds.
