TENNESSEE PRINTERS AND PUBLISHERS

1791-1899

A PRELIMINARY GUIDE

PREFACE

This list is arranged alphabetically by cities. Included for each town are printers, publishers, newspapers and periodicals. Often, the publisher was the same person or persons who printed books, pamphlets, broadsides, etc. However, individuals or organizations also issued books or other printed materials, but contracted the actual printing of such items from local or area printers. Likewise, it was not uncommon in the nineteenth century for newspaper printing offices to print books for others. Sometimes, such places were the only local source for printing, and such institutions advertised and offered such services to area residents. Periodicals were often printed at newspaper printing offices, or sometimes by local printers. However, occasionally these were issued at their own printing facilities. In order to provide a comprehensive , albeit preliminary, record of printing activities in Tennessee through the nineteenth century, it was therefore obviously necessary to include not only the names of the printers, but also to include the names of 'publishers', and of the offices of newspapers and periodicals issued in the state.

This is obviously not a complete record. There seems to be little question that printing establishments came and went in Tennessee without leaving behind any record of their work. That situation is particularly evident regarding some of the earlier printers in the state. A number of the printers or publishers listed here continued in operation into the twentieth century, but for purposes of this compilation the final date shown for all firms is the year 1899. Also, the 'cut-off' date of 1899 has been shown here for all newspapers and periodicals that were published in the state. Although in many instances those publications continued well into the twentieth century, the subject matter here only concerns items that were printed or published during the nineteenth century.

For the information concerning newspapers, I have consulted the usual references, including the National Union Catalog, Union List of Serials, and my book Tennessee Imprints, 1791-1875. In addition, information has been gleaned through the methodical, if sometimes tedious, task of sifting through various available records, including old newspaper advertisements, catalogs of rare book dealers, including those issued for more than forty years, and those issued by Tennessee book dealers including Maynard Hill of Kingsport, and George Webb of Rogersville. Information was also secured from the holdings at the McClung Historical Collection of the Knoxville Public Library, the Special Collections Library at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, and the Tennessee State Library and Archives in Nashville .
