Knoxville Streets

In the

Nineteenth Century

This is intended to provide a listing of many of the streets that have existed in Knoxville, beginning with those that were listed the first city directory in 1859, and through the nineteenth century. These are the streets as they were listed in Knoxville city directories and depicted on contemporary maps.

The roads and streets beyond what were the city limits at those times often were not in city directories, although occasionally directories did include some of the streets in sections that immediately adjoined the city, including such areas as Shieldstown, North Knoxville, West Knoxville, East Knoxville, and Mechanicsville. Many of those streets have been included here, but unfortunately, the information in directories was not consistent, as some streets that existed in those suburban areas often were not included in the directories. For that matter, streets that were in the city itself sometimes were not listed. Obviously, consulting contemporary maps was necessary to compile this list, although even those sources sometimes prove to be unreliable, as they occasionally list proposed streets, other than streets that actually came into existence.

The sources consulted in the compilation of this book are listed in the References Consulted section. These were the aforementioned maps, city directories, and the Records of the Knoxville Boards of Mayor, Aldermen, and Commissioners. A few of the names included here are not streets, but residential communities that were included in city directories, listed there alphabetically under the street listings.

The names of many of Knoxville's streets have changed over the years. A representative listing of some those changes for selected streets is included in Section Two of this compilation. Those who interested in further research concerning specific streets or areas of Knoxville should refer to old maps and city directories listed in the References Consulted section for additional information. However, it is suggested that researchers might wish to physically inspect modern-day streets for verification of the current street names, since for inexplicable reasons even modern maps are not infrequently inaccurate. For example, a map of Knoxville, issued by the Rand McNally Company in 2001, shows the following streets in downtown Knoxville today :

Commerce Avenue : westward from Central Avenue to Walnut Street

Summit Hill : east from M. L. King Blvd., and terminating at Vine and Central

Between Vine and Jackson : Central Avenue is shown as Marble Street.

Errors in that 2001 map are obvious. There have obviously been changes in these streets in modern times, all of which took place some years before the year 2001. That map obviously was based on references to much older maps, and not through personal inspection or survey of those streets. Only a single block of Commerce, between State Street and Central, remains today, and that entire street, west from State to Walnut, no longer exists. Summit Hill certainly continues westward beyond Central, that street having replaced the first block of Vine between Central and State, and continuing today parallel to Vine, all the way to the Henley / Broadway connection. As to a "Marble Street", the block of Central between Vine and Jackson has never been known by that name. It is true that an adjoining street, or alley, between Clinch and Commerce was once known as "Marble Alley", but certainly Central itself, while in early times has been known as Water Street and later as Crozier Street, has never been called Marble street, between Vine and Jackson, or anywhere else.

In some instances, old maps were issued indicating what apparently were the proposed names of streets, when in fact some of those streets never actually existed. I have attempted to avoid listing such ghost streets and roads here. For example, the 1897 Knoxville map published by E. W. Crozier depicts several streets shown crossing Dandridge Pike (now Avenue), in what became the Mountain View community, numbered Twelfth through Nineteenth Streets. A far as I can determine, in the section of Mountain View shown on that map, those streets shown as crossing Dandridge from south to north along Dandridge never existed.

Confusing listings in city directories were not uncommon in the nineteenth century. Some street names were changed several years before the new names were shown in city directories. It is of course possible that old habits were hard to break, not only among those compiling such directories but also among some citizens who perhaps chose -- through habit or even stubbornness -- to continue to use old street names. There is ample evidence that city directories continued to list some streets under their old names, and maps of the period often show streets by names that had been changed several years before those directories were issued, at least according to the official records mentioning such ordinances.

Many streets are listed here including descriptions of the locations. based on the information shown in the city directories. Those descriptions sometimes varied over the years, due to the expansions or changes in the names of various city streets. Additional information is added in many instances, showing name changes, more specific location information, and/or other details. Where directories show the section or community in which a street was located - such as North Knoxville, West Knoxville, East Knoxville, Edgewood, Marble Hill, Shieldstown, etc - that information has often been included.

I'm sure this compilation will be of little interest to most people. Offhand, I can think of three instances where such information may be occasionally helpful. For those researching accounts about places and events that occurred in Knoxville in the nineteenth century, this might provide aid to the identification of some of the streets referred to in those reports, particularly when those street names were changed and no longer exist. Secondly, those researching genealogy might sometimes more readily determine precisely where some people were actually living in those times, rather than finding it necessary to wade through old city directories, or refer to old maps. Finally, some might find it interesting merely to know the original names of some of these streets that they sometime travel, or in some instances where they now reside. I wonder how many people who live in the revitalized section now called the "Fourth and Gill" neighborhood know that until 1890 the name of Gill street was North Morgan street - - or, for that matter, who knew that what is today University avenue, in the Mechanicsville community, was once called Esperiandieu? As someone once observed, armed with the kind of information contained in this compilation, you can wander into most restaurants and get yourself a cup of coffee (as long as you also have a dollar and a quarter.)

Soon thereafter the street no longer existed east of Gay Street. Market was changed to Wall Street in October, 1892. In the late nineteenth century, Asylum - for some years called Montgomery Road - was continued west of Mechanicsville by Clinton Pike. West of Henley, this is Western Avenue today. West from that point, the continuation of the road to the west was Ball Camp Pike. Until you travel some miles from the inner city, today's Clinton Highway is nowhere near what was once Clinton Pike. In 1895, the road leading through Sharp's Gap was called Sharp's Gap Pike, and beyond that to the northwest, where it continued through Dante and to the north it was also called Sharp's Gap Pike. To the southwest, a block south of that point, was Russell Street, which connected with Clinton Road (see below).

CLINTON ROAD. 1895. The western extension of Russell Street, running west to Asylum Street, where those two streets converged and continued to the west on Clinton Pike. The 1895 Knoxville map shows the name of this street as "Old Clinton Road", likely an indication that this was the original route of Clinton Pike, prior to the time Montgomery Road (the extension of Asylum) was constructed, eliminating the curvature in the original route. Other similar examples of such changes in Knox County roads are still evident, including the existence of the original winding Clinton Pike, past at the bottom of the hill north of the airplane gas station, and the weaving of Ball Camp Pike, eventually replaced by the obviously straighter Western Avenue.

SECTION FOUR

SOME RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENTS IN KNOXVILLE

(New Map of Knoxville and Suburbs, published for Ogden Bros., Knoxville, 1895)

( Locations are approximate )

Cherokee Addition. A planned suburb, south of the river, in the area west of Alcoa Highway where the Alcoa Highway bridge crosses the river today. A lengthy article appeared in the Journal on October 18th, 1891, titled "The Garden Spot, Knoxville's Beautiful Suburb, the town of Cherokee", and on that same day a large three column advertisement for the addition appeared in the same newspaper. Four years later, the 1895 Knoxville map still shows the addition, laid out with several streets, including Tennessee Avenue, Cherokee Avenue, East Boulevard, and Esplanade. However, despite its prominence on that map, Cherokcc was a failed endeavor, no homes or other structures were ever built on the site and it ws abandoned.

Chilhowee. A residential development in east Knoxville, north of the river and south of Dandridge Pike. Only two streets in the development - - Mohawk Avenue and Muscogee Avenue - - had been named in 1895.

Cold Spring Addition. From Spruce north to Summer Street, and from Linden north to beyond Woodbine.

Edgewood Land and Improvement Co. Development. East of railroad, between Madison Avenue and Monroe Avenue, east to Barnard Street.

Hazen Hill Addition. Jefferson Avenue north to Adams Avenue, generally from Bertrand and eastward beyond Spruce.

Lakeside Addition. Development south of Rutledge Pike, south of Lake Ottosee.

Lincoln Park. In north Knoxville. The 1894 Knoxville Blue Book lists fifteen families living in Lincoln Park, exclusive of a separate listing for Chickamauga Avenue.

Lonsdale. From Virginia Avenue northwest to Ohio Avenue, and from Beaumont to the Southern Railway Repair Shops.

Mayfield Development. East Knoxville area, between Gillespie and Pearson, and east to Cherry Street.

Mayfield Addition. North Knoxville, south of Pearson (Cecil) Avenue.

Mountain View. A north Knoxville residential development between Oldham and Emerald, from McMillan Street north to Coleman.

Rosedale. A development bordering Lonsdale to the northwest. .

Roseberry City. West of Lincoln Park and east of the railroad, around the western end of where Chickamauga Avenue intersects with Central Avenue - -the area later called Buzzard Roost. Oddly, the 1895 city of Knoxville map does not show Chickamauga, but the Knoxville Blue Book that year does, and lists a number of residents.

Strong and Thompsons Addition. Between the eastern terminal of Bell Avenue and Cherry Street, south of Rutledge Pike. The southern end of this addition was called "The Corso", and also had the name of "The Crescent", as the street there resembles a crescent, and at one time was called Crescent Blvd. The listings in the city directories of connecting streets in that area verify that this was in the area that once had been the Old Fair Grounds.

Stuart development. West of Central Avenue, centered at Oldham and Emerald. (For some reason the name of the street in this section was changed at some time from Stuart to Stewart.)

Thompson / Crawford addition. Both sides of Middlebrook , west of Asylum Street. The original Westview community was a part of this development.

Williams Addition. East Knoxville, between Glenwood Avenue and Cherry Street, northeast of the Old Fair Grounds.

Williams Villa Sites. Bordering the Cold Spring Addition on the north, northeast of the Hazen Hill Addition.

SECTION FIVE

STREET RAILWAYS AND ELECTRIC STREETCAR ROUTES

Following is a brief description of the horse drawn and electric streetcar lines that were in Knoxville in the late nineteenth century. I have shown here the original routes by which passengers on these lines traveled. Also, for those who might be interested in knowing about, traveling, those original routes, I have added the streets one would take today to emulate those routes, although in several instances streets that were in existence in those times no longer exist, thus some of these same lines cannot today be precisely traveled.

STREET RAILWAYS, 1886

These were horse-drawn railway cars. The first lines were in operation in 1876. The routes in 1886 were the following :

Mabry Avenue and Hardee Street :

Mabry Street line. From Market Square via Union, Gay, Vine and Mabry to the stables, at junction of Mabry and Bell. Today, the nearest route would be as follows : From Market to Union, east to Gay, north to Summit Hill, right on Summit Hill, past Central Avenue, and continuing approximately to Dandridge Avenue.

Bell Avenue line. From Market Square via Union, Gay, Vine, Crozier, Hardee and Bell, to stables.

Today, the nearest route would be as follows : From Market to Union, east to Gay, north to Summit Hill, right on Summit Hill to Central, north on Central to Jackson, east to Winona, south to Vine, then right to the intersection of Summit Hill and Dandridge Avenue.

Market Street Railway Co. :

Red cars From Market Square. via Union, Walnut, ans Asylum to stables, junction Asylum and Clinton Road. Today, the nearest route would be as follows : Market to Union, Union west to Walnut, Walnut to Summit Hill, Summit Hill to Broadway/Henley, west on Western Avenue to intersection of Western and Deaderick Avenue.

Yellow cars : From Market Square. via Union, Walnut, Asylum, Lenoir, Hanna Ave. and Adkin to Branner Street. Today, the nearest route would be as follows : (The route shown for the "Red Cars" above would be essentially the "Yellow Cars" today, since - - because only remnants, if anything at all, remains today of the original streets Lenoir, Hanna and Adkin, which were mostly demolished during the construction of the Interstate).

Knoxville Streetcar Railroad Company :

Yellow cars. From Main Street via Gay, West Depot and Broad St. to stables, Broad and Crozier Today, the nearest route would be as follows : Main Street to Gay Street, Gay Street to Depot Street, west on Depot to Broadway, north on Broadway to intersection of Central and Broadway.

Red cars. From Main Street. via Gay, West and East Depot, Morgan, Third Avenue and Crozier to Stables. Today, the nearest route would be as follows : Main Street to Gay Street, Gay to Depot Street, east on Depot to Central, north on Central to Fifth Avenue, east on Fifth to Morgan (today, the nearest route one could take to reach Morgan, which was demolished south of this point), north on Morgan to Third Avenue, west on Third to Central, then north on Central to the intersection of Broadway and Central.

ELECTRIC STREETCARS

Fountain Head Dummy Line :

The Depot for the Fountain Head Dummy Line was located on the north side of Broadway, at the corner of Houston Street (now Tyson Street), across from the City Market (that name changed to Emory Park in the early twentieth century). The line ran from the depot through North Knoxville, Lincoln Park, to Arlington, and on to Fountain Head (now Fountain City). That route was as follows : North along Houston Street (now Tyson Street), past the Grey Cemetery and National Cemetery to Munson Street (now Bernard) Street ; across an angle to Wray Street, continuing along that street beyond Dameron, Baxter and Anderson Streets ; across an angle to the right, crossing Brookside (now Oklahoma Avenue), and onto Chestnut (now Branner Street) then continuing on Chestnut past Scott Street to Woodland, northeast along Woodland and continuing past Central, McMillan, Cornelia, Corta (now Harvey), Coleman (now Glenwood), to a point past Kenyon, then turning back to the north to Lincoln Park. From Lincoln Park, the line ran to Broad (Broadway), probably along or near Chickamauga Avenue - - city maps of the period do not show the are this far to the north - - to Arlington, and then north on Tazewell Pike (now Broadway), and on to Fountain Head.

Knoxville Electric Company :

Knoxville's early streetcars were called "Electric Railways". The first lines were in operation in 1890 and 1891. By 1894, two companies, the Knoxville Electric Railway Company and the West End Street Railway Company were operating. The various routes of the first two mentioned lines are listed in the 1894 Knoxville Blue Book, and the route for the Fountain City line is described here based on the 1895 map of Knoxville and Suburbs. The original routes for all lines are listed below, and I have added to each the approximate route one would take today to trace the original routes of these streetcars. In several cases, streets that existed in the late 1890's no longer exist, thus this modern re-tracing of the original routes is only approximate in most cases.

Asylum Street Line : From Gay to Union, Walnut, Asylum, Clinton, Deaderick, Arthur, Calloway, Atkin, Hannah Ave., Lenoir, Asylum, back to Gay. Today, the nearest route would be as follows : Gay Street to Union, then to Walnut, then to Summit Hill, then across the Broadway / Henley intersection to Western, Western to Deaderick, Deaderick to Arthur Street, Arthur Street back to Western, then Western back to Gay Street.

Obviously the construction of the Interstate years ago eliminated some of the streets along this route. Both the Asylum Street route and the McGhee Street routes went through Mechanicsville, the difference being that the Asylum Street route continued on Clinton Road (Western) to Deaderick Avenue, then down Deaderick and along these other streets, to Asylum (also now Western Avenue), and back to Gay Street, while the McChee Street line route turned to the north on Lenoir, and essentially took the opposite route through Mechanicsville, finally taking Deaderick back to Clinton Road and Asylum and then back to Gay Street.

Bell Avenue Line : From Gay, Vine, Central Ave., Hardee, Bell Ave., right on Adams Street, left on Bell Avenue (later Broadway) - - through what was once the Old Fair Grounds to Castle Avenue - - and left on Castle to Rutledge Pike, (later McCalla), to Elmwood Park (Lake Ottosee).

Today, the nearest route would be as follows : Gay Street to Summit Hill, east (right) to Central Avenue, north (left) to Jackson in the "Old City", right (east) on Jackson to Ben Hur, right (south) on Ben Hur to Wilson Street, left (east) onto Wilson, to Beaman Street, left (north) on Beaman to M. L. King Blvd, left (west) on M. L. King Blvd. to North Beaman, and right (north) on North Beaman to Magnolia. This seems to be the closest approximate route today to the original Bell Avenue / Broadway line. Beaman is the closest street north from Wilson to M. L. King, then continues after a slight offset to the west, to Magnolia. In the middle of this block of North Beaman, on the east side between M. L. King and Magnolia, is where the Elmwood Park station was located.

Broadway Line : From Broadway, Depot, Broad to Turner's Park.

Today, the nearest route would be as follows : North on Broadway to Depot and continuing on Broadway past Central and Glenwood to the intersection of Broadway and Cecil Street. Turner Park was up the hill to the east, on the north side of Cecil Street, approximately across from where Sixth Avenue intersects at Cecil. The 1897 Knoxville map shows that the Broadway line ended around First Creek, thus those going to Turner Park obviously hoofed it to Cecil and up the hill from that point to the park.

Mabry Street Line : Gay, Vine, Mabry to Confederate Cemetery.

Today, the nearest route would be as follows : Gay Street to Summit Hill, right on Summit Hill and continuing up the hill past Central Avenue on Summitt Hill, to intersection at M. L. King Blvd. Left (east) on King Blvd, to the point where South Van Gilder intersects from the north, and where the Bethel cemetery is on the south side of King.. The Confederate Cemetery is south of this cemetery, but records I have located make no mention that this line ran to the east on any street other than Mabry, (later Vine)

McGhee Street Line : Gay, Union, Walnut, Asylum, Lenoir, Hannah Ave., Atkin, Calloway, Arthur, Deadrick, Clinton, Asylum back to Gay. (See Asylum Street Line for the nearest route today)

Middlebrook Line : Gay, Fifth Avenue, Branner, University Ave., Seventeenth, Middlebrook Pike to Westview.

Today, the nearest route would be as follows : Gay Street north to Fifth Avenue, Fifth Avenue to University Avenue, University Avenue past Western to Middlebrook Pike, and a few blocks to the west (Portions of the original "Westview" community were located along both sides of Middlebrook in this area)

Park Avenue Line : Gay, Park, Magnolia Avenue to Lake Ottosee.

Today, the nearest route would be as follows : North on Gay Street to Magnolia Avenue, and continuing east on Magnolia to Chilhowee Park. While Magnolia has been widened and somewhat redirected, the only difference today is that Magnolia Avenue west of First Creek was originally called Park Street.

Washington Avenue Line : Gay, Fifth Avenue, Morgan, Third Avenue, Fifth Avenue, Albers, Sixth Avenue, Washington Avenue.

Today, the nearest route would be as follows : North on Gay Street to Fifth Avenue, right (east) on Fifth Avenue to Lamar Street, left (north) on Lamar to Third Avenue, right on Morgan to Fifth Avenue, left on Fifth Avenue to Sixth Avenue, right on Sixth Avenue to Washington Avenue, then right (east) on Washington Avenue. (This somewhat different route today is necessitated because the interstate resulted in the elimination of portions of original streets in this area.)

WEST END STREET RAILWAY

Circle Park Line : Gay, Clinch Avenue, South Seventh, Cumberland Ave., Temple Ave., Yale Ave., Granite to Cumberland Avenue and back to Gay.

Highland Avenue Line : Gay, Clinch Avenue, North Second, Highland Ave. to Sixteenth and return.

Today, with the recent re-opening of the Clinch Avenue bridge west of Henley Street, these original routes can be approximately traced. However, due to the numerous changes in street names in modern times in the University of Tennessee area, I have chosen to leave to the reader the task of making his or her own guesstimate as to the route that might be most approximate to the originals today. A primary reason is the fact that it seems quite possible that a player may score a few more touchdowns, or a coach might win a few more games, which apparently would necessitate the renaming of additional streets in the area, rendering any suggestions here concerning a comparison of the modern routes with the originals out of date.
