This is a list of some of the materials relating to Tennessee that I've sold during almost fifty years in dealing in old, scarce, rare, and collectible books. This primarily includes books, but also includes such items as old photographs, pamphlets, broadsides, sheet music, and other materials. Most of the books were marketed through my printed catalogs, directed to collectors, libraries, and rare book dealers, but also included here are some books that were sold directly to those sources and never appeared in my catalogs.

I issued more than one hundred catalogs, beginning in 1960. This list includes books about people, places, and events in Tennessee, early and unusual imprints, books by Tennessee writers, association copies, and other books related to the state. This can hardly be considered a complete record of the Tennessee-related books I've sold over the years. In fact, some of the individual catalogs I've issued offered more books than are included in this entire compilation, and exclusive of books that were sold directly and were not listed in those catalogs, during those years I've offered more than twenty-five thousand books for sale. This is therefore obviously a somewhat selective list of the Tennessee books I've cataloged, although I have attempted to include most of the rarer titles I've had the opportunity to offer for sale.

I have no idea how many, if any, dealers in old books have ever taken the time and trouble to compile a list similar to this one. In any event, this represents many years of searching far and wide for Tennessee books, and selling those materials to interested parties, and I thought I would record this information for the benefit of the handful of people who may be interested.

Abernathy, Matt. Scrapbook, assembled in 1876 and 1877. Abernathy wrote columns of local and historical interest for the Jackson, Tennessee Whig and Tribune, under the pseudonym "Ragged Edge". This scrapbook primarily contains newspaper clippings of those columns. Also included in the scrapbook are some original manuscript notations by Abernathy, and tipped-in are four original Confederate States bills -- Two, Five, Ten, and Twenty Dollar notes. Catalog 76.

ACTS AND RESOLUTIONS, STATE OF TENNESSEE, EXTRA SESSION OF THE 35TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY, JULY 27, 1868. Nashville 1868 The session was called because of "the rebellious elements of the state ... perfecting a military organization known as the Ku Klux Klan". Catalog 49. An early official Tennessee document concerning the Klan, which was organized in Pulaski in 1867 and disbanded in 1869.

ACTS OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, 33RD. GENERAL ASSEMBLY, EXTRA SESSION, APRIL, 1861. Nashville 1861 The "Secession" Acts of the state, at the beginning of the Civil War. Catalog 22. Whether it is because I have long been actively searching for Tennessee imprints, or that perhaps more people originally acquired and kept this book than one would expect. In any event, I have probably had at least twenty copies of these Tennessee Secession Acts. They are desirable, but even today only considered to be scarce and not rare.

ACTS OF THE FIRST SESSION, SECOND CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Philadelphia. 1792. An association copy, being George Roulstone's book, with his name stamp on six pages, and his signature on the title page. Roulstone was Tennessee's first printer. This also has the signature of William Moore, who succeeded Roulstone as Knoxville's printer. Catalog 89. This was only the second book I ever owned that had the signature of George Roulstone, who reportedly pronounced his name as in the modern spelling of this name, "Ralston"

AMENDED FRANCHISE ACT PASSED BY THE THIRTY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF TENNESSEE, SECOND ADJOURNED SESSION, 1867. Nashville. 1867. Catalog 90. In order to vote, an oath of loyalty was required, and no persons who had served for or contributed to the Confederacy was eligible to vote ... but this Act also obviously continued post-was Confederate sentiments, stating that it was not to be construed to "allow the colored man to hold office or sit on juries".

AMERICAN IMPRINTS INVENTORY. NO. 32. A CHECKLIST OF TENNESSEE IMPRINTS IN TENNESSEE LIBRARIES, 1793-1840. Nashville. 1941. Catalog 64. This expanded the locations of Tennessee imprints between 1793 to 1840 to include books located in all American libraries. These were obviously of invaluable use to me, together with several other bibliographical works and my own records of unknown imprints I had encountered over the years, in compiling Tennessee Imprints. The microfilms of the original index card records from the Imprints Inventory, still unpublished, were of equal importance, providing information to enable me to reduce to printed form a number of previously unpublished records of Tennessee imprints for the period between 1851 to 1860.

Armstrong, Zella. NOTABLE SOUTHERN FAMILIES. Volumes One, Two, Three and four, all issued in Chattanooga, 1918-1926. Catalog 84. As is obvious here, Ms Armstrong issued these volumes separately over an eight year period. This was the only time I ever offered an entire set for sale at one time.

Armstrong, R.H. PRIVATE JOURNAL AND JOTTINGS DOWN, IN AND OUT OF PRARIEDOM. No date. Typescript, of an unpublished manuscript. The author, leaving Knoxville in 1850, traveled in the west - mostly in Texas. Catalog 59. I acquired this from a lady in Knoxville from whom I also purchased a bound volume of very early East Tennessee University publications. She did not know who had transcribed this, but she did have the original manuscript, which she was unwilling to sell, although I certainly attempted to acquire that rare jewel. I don't know what eventually happened to that manuscript.

Boyd, Dr. Charles D. A collection of fifty original photographs -- mostly portraits -- of this Knoxville African American Dentist, and his family, whose office was on Vine Street. Includes three large photographs of the interior of his office, and a group portrait of his graduating class at Austin High School. Catalog 86 I sold these to a library in the Knoxville area, and I was glad they stayed in this neighborhood. I purchased these from one of my book clients who lived in Indiana. He called when he was coming through town and offered to sell these to me, and I quickly accepted his kind offer. It was interesting to learn that he had originally bought these photographs years ago in Knoxville, at an antique shop, while on a visit here.

Catalog 50 This book is scarce in its own right, and in my opinion is one of the few twentieth century historical Tennessee books where the presence of the dust jacket greatly increased the value. Of course, collectors of literary works consider the dust jacket a prime consideration, and in some instances they will pay five or ten times as much (or more) for a copy with a dust jacket as for one lacking the jacket. Generally, the value of a dust jacket on a twentieth century Tennessee historical book is minimal. However, Brown's Old Frontiers, for whatever reasons, virtually never shows up with the original dust jacket, and when it does the jacket likely adds considerably to the book's value.

Brownlow, William G. A large collection of manuscript materials relating to "Parson" William G. Brownlow and his son, John Bell Brownlow. Includes letters and documents dating from the 1840's to the late 19th century 1870's. Approximately three hundred items, primarily manuscripts, with a few broadsides. Examples including a manuscript pro-Union Civil War speech by Brownlow ; letters from John Bell, Confederate General Carroll, VP Schuler Colfax ; letters from publisher George Childs in Philadelphia that led to the publication of 'Parson Brownlow's Book" ; letter from Horace Maynard, letter from General Burnside ; letter from W.G. McAdoo ; letter from historian John Allison ; letter from General Thomas ; detailed seven page manuscript description of the Knights of the Golden Circle ; and letters from Governors of various states. Also, many letters from Mayors and other officials in Tennessee concerning the problems in Tennessee caused by Ku Klux Klan activities during W.G. Brownlow's term as Governor of the state, and numerous materials relating to Tennessee railroads during the same period. Direct sale, 1992. I thought it was imperative that this collection remain together, and it was sold intact to a Tennessee library. I am a firm believer that such collections should remain intact for purposes of historical research, particularly because so many similar important American collections from various states have been broken up and sold piece by piece, I resisted the temptation to sell these items individually, despite the fact that I would likely have realized considerably more for the collection.

Direct sale, 1980 These are still the only copies of this rare publication I have ever seen. It was a smallish publication, the dimensions not much larger than a small magazine such as the Readers Digest. I always though it interesting that the Knoxville Journal claimed to have been published since the 1830's, stretching back before Brownlow's first appearance in Knoxville in the early 1850's, to his Elizabethton newspaper. Actually, Brownlow was publishing this Jonesborough newspaper in the 1840's, and it was an irregular publication, thus the claim of continuous publication dating back to the 1830's for that Knoxville newspaper always seemed questionable, at least to me.

In the 1960's, a used book dealer named Hooberry operated a book shop in Nashville, down the street from the Ryman Auditorium where the Grand Old Opry was held. Among other things I bought from him were a half dozen copies of this book. He had acquired a remainder stock, and still had forty or fifty copies around. When I went back a couple of years later they were all gone. He was then an older gentleman, and the next time I visited Nashville he likewise was gone.

The rarest issues are those in the original printed wrappers, and few collectors or libraries have a complete set in that format. Next rarest are the bound volumes in the original printed boards, which were issued by the publisher using the front and lower printed wrappers from unsold copies of individual issues of the periodical.

CARRIER'S ADDRESS TO THE PATRONS OF THE KNOXVILLE REGISTER, DECEMBER 25, 1862. Knoxville. 1862. Broadside, 9 1/4 x 16. Decorated border, containing a poem in three columns, giving a chronology of Civil War events to this date. Catalog 90. I uncovered this rare broadside buried in a badly worn box in the basement of a house in east Knoxville. It was one of the few salvageable items there, which was a real shame, because the box had originally been packed full of manuscripts and printed materials from the Civil War era in Knoxville. Unfortunately, most of those materials were water stained, stuck together, rotted, nibbled by vermin, and virtually fell to pieces as I tried to gingerly remove them from the box. Only a half dozen or so of those items were not totally ruined, including this broadside that somehow had survived.

The interesting illustrations in this book are crude and somewhat amateurish, certainly appearing to be a local production. I did a little research (although not extensive) and decided that the illustrations in this book represent perhaps the earliest such artwork to appear in an east Tennessee publication, and possibly anywhere in Tennessee. The only other early Tennessee work I can identify are the few illustrations -- likewise crude, and obviously locally produced -- that appear in William Brownlow's 1844 Jonesboro publication, "A Political Register"

Catalog 102 Not too many years ago, a well known rare book dealer in the eastern U.S. listed this book in one of his catalogs, where he was asking a moderate price, and referred to this as a "little known, out of the way" publication". Had he checked further, he would have discovered that this was considered a classic legal treatise, reprinted many times, and was required reading by law students at many schools, well into the twentieth century.

Catalog Two. While most modern writings and references to this Knoxville photographic studio refer to their justly famous "Madonna", and other "artistic" prints that were sold throughout the country, few seem to mention the fact that this studio's most famous prints were their humorous stereotypic photographs of African Americans, which were immensely popular in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.

Views of Chattanooga, probably by the Linn Studio, or Point Lookout, and their successors, Hardee Bros. At least some of these views appeared in various publications by those firms in the nineteenth century. While publications containing photographic illustrations by these studios were issued for many years, and are not particularly uncommon, original scenic photographs of this vintage are very scarce. Contains a few leaves of inscribed leaves of sentiments and poetry, followed by several original drawings, executed by talented person(s), being scenes from the old country, drawn in pencil, charcoal, or pen and ink. Chavannes published his own works, in paperback format, printed rather crudely on inferior stock and on a press that apparently was located at his home in North Knoxville. Today they are very scarce. Once a California dealer came through town and bought some books from me. At that time, he also asked if I had any books written by an Albert "Chay - Vins". At the time I didn't have any, but I did tell him that the pronunciation of the name, at least in these parts, was"Sha - Vanns".

It is a directory of city residents, but contains more, as those who lived in various bordering Knox County communities were also listed. I did later sell another copy, which I listed only under the title (See number 1045 in this list).

Crozier, E. W. (Publisher) THE WHITE CAPS. A HISTORY OF THE ORGANIZATION IN SEVIER COUNTY. Knoxville. 1899. Catalog 55. The White Caps were a self-appointed vigilante group in Sevier County that terrorized the area until the authorities finally clamped down, and convicted and executed some members for serious crimes. For some while after this book was published, it was rumored that certain family members of those who were named in the book as members of the organization systematically sought out and destroyed whatever copies they could find of the book. I was at a flea market on Chapman Highway in 1979 when I was shocked to find a box containing about twenty copies of this original edition. More than half of them were water stained and so badly worn that they were useless, but I quickly bought all of them, and listed a copy in my catalog 55, It promptly sold, and within a year or two all were gone. I had never had a decent copy of the book previous to that lucky find, and I've never seen one since then.

Generally considered the first Anti-Slavery publication in the United States, these are bound in a volume containing a run of issues of the Western Monitor and Religious Journal, published by Heiskell and Brown in Knoxville, being issues from October, 1819, through April, 1820. It would seem more than a coincidence that these were bound together, since the format and type style used by the Knoxville firm of Heiskell and Brown is identical to that in the issues of the Emancipator, causing me to believe that while this was published in Jonesborough it was actually printed by the Heiskell and Brown printing firm in Knoxville.

I sold at least a dozen copies of this book, but all of those were sold before an eastern book dealer listed a copy of this book at a greatly inflated price and described it as both a previously unknown rarity and as a Civil War regimental history. Since then, naturally other book dealers jumped on that high-priced band wagon, and the price of the book skyrocketed.

The cover title is "My Dear Mr. Millis". Of a letter from Heinsohn to H.A. Millis, Chairman of the National Labor Relations Board, concerning the failed attempt to unionize Cherokee Company. The book contains 13 original letters between Millis and Heinsohn, and 33 letters to Heinsohn, from various prominent business executives in the United States, including one from Eddie Rickenbacker, of Eastern Air Lines). This contains mathematical instructions on various subjects - weights and measures, division, multiplication, etc. One note indicates he was born in 1811, and finished this book when he was age 25, the dates of compilation being from 1830 to 1835. A last gasp effort to defeat integration, this unsigned broadside lists a number of Knoxville restaurants that still refused to integrate, mentioning that those that had integrated were being done so only for a "thirty day trial period." The restaurants listed here were soon likewise integrated, and this notice mentions that this was not issued by those restaurants but as "a public service". None of those restaurants was adversely affected by any backlash due to their initial refusal to integrate. Catalog 102

Dearborn, Michigan. 1920-1921, Published by Henry Ford, who later ceased and denounced this radical Anti-Semitic publication. Catalog 81. The content of these volumes obviously had nothing to do with Tennessee or Knoxville, but the odd circumstance concerning these books was the fact that the first volume included a signed presentation inscription from prominent Knoxville African American, James Garfield Beck, whose original home in the Mountain View community is now the Beck Cultural Center. I purchased these books at an auction sale of the contents of Beck's home, following Mrs. Beck's death. Why or how James Beck acquired and chose to present these anti-Semitic books is an unanswered puzzlement.
