The Spare Room

Every home needs a spare room - a place to put things that don't fit in any of the other rooms. I find that my Home on the Web also needs a spare room. It will contain odds and ends - interesting sites I have visited - just a general hodge-podge of unrelated things.

To start off, I recently heard a most inspiring lecture by a professor at Carnegie Mellon University by the name of Randy Pausch. In September of 2006, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. After surgery and chemotherapy, it was thought that he had "beat it" but, sadly, not so. In August of 2007, it was found that the cancer had returned and metastasized to his liver and spleen. He was given a prognosis of three to six months to live. Shortly after that, he gave a lecture at Carnegie Mellon that I found truly inspiring. It is entitled "How to Achieve Your Childhood Dreams" and can be viewed here. It is supposedly directed to his audience but, in actuality, he is giving the talk for his children, who will be able to watch and listen to him when they are older and get a glimpse of what kind of man their father was. The talk is over an hour long so allow enough time to listen to the whole thing. Be sure to watch it full screen, and turn your speakers up a bit so you don't miss some of the little 'side comments.' If you are interested, you can google his name and find numerous sites about him and by him, including a log of his "cancer journey".

( Professor Pausch died July 25, 2008 )

How good is your vocabulary?   Free Rice   is a neat site where you can test your vocabulary and help provide rice to needy people at the same time.    It is fun to do; the words get progressively harder.   (Familiarity with Latin helps) The highest level I've been able to achieve is 41.
