State of Alabama February 12, 1838 Dale County To his Excellency Arthur P Bagby Governor of the State of Alabama: Sir: I received a Letter on the Sixth instant from a friend living in Florida which informed me that the Indians had Robed Col. Brights Bote twist as he was running in the Chocktawhatchy River. On the first day it was Robed by five indians and one Negro. On the second day afterwards, it was Robed by Seven indians and one Negro. They got five Cegs of powder, and a quantity Led, one Barel of Sugar, Whiskey Blankets. There is an order for a draft to take place in Jackson County, Florida this week to go against the Indians, those Robbers. I have Sixty men under my Command, but owing to the inclemecy of the Wether and high waters, I have been deprived of searching somethick coverts which I contemplated to do. We have discovered frequent sine of Indians, but we have saw but one indian as yet, which made his escape into a swamp; there is frequently small parties of Indians seen by persons looking after there Stock about pea River. But from all appearances they are not disposed to fight when they see any white person, they make all Speed for some thick covert. I think the Indians is not disposed to do any michief at this time, more than to pree on our Stock. A good many of the citizens of Pea River has returned to there home under the protection of my Company and think to be further protected if necessary: We have to hawl our provision from 35 to 45 miles owing to the citizens having been drove from these farms in the lower part of this County and off from Pea River: I am now informed by our contracter Judg Harper that we shall have to hawl our Corn from Barber County 60 or 70 miles from Head Qarters owing to the rappid increase on the price of Corn. Judg Harper has informed me that if he had money in his hands that he could save a hamson percent to the State though he has purchased provision much cheaper than was antisipated. He received much praise forhis exertions on the part of the State: On Monday the nineteenth instant, I shall march my Company for Yellow River thirth miles from out present head Qarters, here I expect to sirch the swamps three weeks before I return, there being a large desert pronney County, the frequent haunt of Indians: Sir I am yours with respect.
