Grand Slam Convention, Pasadena, California

March 22-24, 2002

Friday-
Gates McFadden (Dr. Beverly Crusher) began the festivities on Friday. She seemed most gratified by the treatment she received from the fans.

Bill Paxton ("Terminator", "Aliens" and "Titanic") graced the stage next, along with Matthew O'Leary, his co-star in the upcoming film, "Frailty".

George Takei (Hikaru Sulu) and Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) shared the spotlight, proving that the “old-timers” could still carry their weight.

Rod Roddenberry (the GreatBird of the Galaxy’s son) hosted a screening of the familiar Star Trek blooper reels.

Nana Visitor (Kira Nerys) also appeared. The day closed with Casey Biggs (Damar), Marc Alaimo (Gul Dukat) and Jeffrey Combs (Weyoun and Brunt) performing a 45-minute recitation of various Shakespeare pieces.

The Friday Evening Show was called "Remembering Gene", a tribute to Gene Roddenberry. Hosted by Richard Arnold, the stars who paid tribute included Bjo Trimble, Robert Justman, David Alexander (Roddenberry's biographer), Nichelle Nichols, George Takei , Walter Koenig (Pavel Chekov), Marina Sirtis (Counselor Troi), and Majel (Number One, Nurse Chapel, and Lwaxana Troi) and Rod Roddenberry. These included moving personal remembrances and amusing anecdotes.

Saturday-
Saturday began with Brannon Braga answering questions such as was he was aware of Star Trek "canon" (he categorically stated that he *was*), why he chose the style of theme song that he did for "Enterprise" (he wanted something different, and he likes the song), and why the conclusion of Voyager was as abrupt as it was presented in the final episode (he wasn't involved in "Voyager" toward the end, instead devoting his time to the development of "Enterprise").

Michael Piller previewed his upcoming USA Network series, "The Dead Zone", with stars Anthony Michael Hall and Nicole de Boer (Ezri Dax) appearing via video.

The audience was treated to an upcoming episode of "Futurama", which is a Star Trek tribute using several Trek voices.

David Arquette hyped an upcoming film, "Eight Legged Freaks", featuring giant spiders.

Jonathan Frakes (William and Thomas Riker) next hit the stage and didn’t stop moving for the entire presentation (as usual). He was highlighting his latest directorial film effort, "Clockstoppers", and he also brought actor Michael Biehn ("Terminator", "The Abyss" and "Tombstone") on stage with him, along with producer Gale Ann Hurd.

William Shatner (James T. Kirk) provided the next entertainment, while Dan Madsen and Larry Nemecek of The Fan Club (Star Trek Communicator) appeared next and solicited ideas for future coverage from the audience.

Then, Shatner popped up on stage again to introduce Joan Collins (Edith Keeler), who was attending her very first convention (“No one asked me before!”)

Then five "Enterprise" cast members appeared together: Connor Trinneer (Charles Tucker), Dominic Keating (Malcolm Reed), Anthony Montgomery (Travis Mayweather), Linda Park (Hoshi Sato) and Jonathan Billingsley (Phlox). Mayweather and Keating brought their own cameras and took pictures of the audience. The group interaction reminded me greatly of the hi-jinks of the Voyager cast on stage last year.

The Saturday night show was "Love Letters", performed by Robert Duncan McNeill (Tom Paris) and Roxann Dawson (B’lanna Torres). It had most of the female audience members in tears.

Sunday-
Sunday began with Scarlett Pomers (Naomi Wildman), who was dressed and made up to be a preteen parent’s nightmare. She sported a midriff-baring outfit and a (temporary) tattoo.

Ricardo Montalban (Khan Noonien Singh) appeared next, terribly moved by the outpouring of love and appreciation extended by attendees. A highlight was a brief appearance on stage by Judson Scott, who played his son Joachim in “The Wrath of Khan.”

Robert Duncan McNeill and Roxann Dawson were up next, acting very much like the "married couple" they played on Voyager. Dawson stated that she had no interest in donning the Klingon makeup again, which does not bode well for a future Voyager production.

Producer Frank Marshall previewed his upcoming film, "Signs", which stars Mel Gibson, with trailers and behind-the-scenes video.

Colm Meaney (Miles O’Brien) hit the stage next, talking not only about TNG and DS9, but also about his other acting projects.

Kate Mulgrew (Kathryn Janeway) ruled the audience during her appearance, wowing them when she spontaneously removed her earrings to give them to a shy toddler.

Andrew Robinson (Elim Garak) finished out the day with his vivid memories of his character and the Deep Space Nine episodes he appeared in, as well as "Hellraiser".
