Text: Modern Biology
Course Objectives: 1. To develop a vocabulary of terms related to the study of Biology 2. To develop a better understanding of the Biosphere. 3. To develop the study skills and thinking skills for being successful in higher academic settings 4. To develop critical thinking skills appropriate to high school learning in preparation for college.
Essential functions: 1. listening and note-taking skills 2. organizational skills to keep a notebook 3. application of concepts 4. reading ability at the high school level 5. basic lab safety skills 6. critical thinking
Policies: 1. Chapter tests are announced at least 2 days in advance 2. Work missed due to an excused absence is the responsibility of the student. **If you are absent the day an assignment is due, you will be expected to have that assignment with you on the day of your return. ** If you are absent the day before a test, you will be expected to take the test as scheduled. An exception may be granted if you are out for more than one day. 3. Days missed due to an extracurricular activity (i.e. volleyball, football, dance, Band, ROTC, ECT…) are not counted as absent and therefore you are responsible for. the material missed including test announcements. Be sure to find out what you missed ASAP. You are responsible for assignments due and test or quizzes announced. 4. It is the responsibility of the student to make an appointment to make up missed tests, quizzes and Labs. If the student chooses to make up the work during class time they are responsible for the work they miss during the make-up. Students have 3 days of the missed test, quiz or lab to make arrangements for the make-up. If the arrangements are not made, or they miss the appointment the grade will stay a zero. 5. Your textbook and notebook should go home with you for at least a 15 minute concentrated study session EVERY NIGHT!! 6. Students may be video taped or audio taped in class at times as part of activities or labs. These videos or audios will never be published without the consent of the parent.
Grading: 1. Sixty percent of your grade will be an average of your lab reports and test scores. 2. Forty percent will be an average of all other scores— quizzes homework, etc.
Materials: 1. Bring your notebook to class every day!! 2. Keep a notebook for Biology only 3. pen or pencil 4. assignment book/sheet 5. YOU ARE EXPECTED TO HAVE THE APPROPROIATE TOOLS WITH YOU EACH DAY. 6. I DO NOT LOAN PENCILS OR PENS. BE SURE YOU HAVE A PENCIL ON EACH TEST DAY BECAUSE AT LEAST PART OF YOUR TEST WILL BE ON BUBBLE SHEETS THAT REQUIRE PENCIL.
